Common practice is to replace the crush seal, but I have heard of people reusing it.

Crush seal? If you are talking about the crush sleeve (goes inside between the front and rear pinion bearings) then mark the pinion nut such that you can put it back exactly to where it came from and you should be fine. If you're talking about the pinion seal, replace it regardless.
I suppose it's doable but very difficult to -properly- setup a new crush sleeve without removing the ring gear.:2cents:
