so did you have a log to look at to see what caused the faliure? i assume it detonated?

Yup, fairly serious actually. I just wasn't quick enough with the throttle.

That suck's Don. What gaskets are you going to use now?
I used the fel-pro 522sd on mine they were kinda sticky.

Ordering Cometic's. AFA the log goes it's pretty embarrassing because I didn't let up when I knew I should. :squint::roll::rotf: Let me think about it.

If folks want to chime in on why it's #4 go ahead. I'd like to know as well.

better put Felpro MLS gaskets in it. There $60 A set at Autozone. they have to order them. Read into it really good. I have never had trouble sence I put them on.

Sorry to hear about your problem. It is always time to bite nails when you need to do a compression test so I hope everything works out for you. What seems to be the best head gaskets for someone running 22-24psi on a HPQ6768. For some reason the previous owner of my Syclone used ARP head studs but kept stock GM gaskets. I personally would like to change those over winter. If you don't mind me asking about what everyone recommend.

A learning opportunity...

When it pings that bad, it really doesn't matter what you put in there for a head gasket- something is gonna give. I consider the head gasket the least damaging thing to let go.

If you're gonna switch head gasket types, you've pretty much gotta do both sides.

I'd also try to bias a bit more fuel to #4.. If there's an injector that flows a bit more than the others, put that one on #4.

I'd also suggest a real good plug read once you get it back together.

Both gaskets will be changed. I can't imagine, at least in this case, doing all this work and not changing them both. Plugs looked good on the last read except for #6 looked rich or possibly pumping a bit of oil although oil consumption was -0-. I'm gonna send the injs out. When I pulled the plugs when this happened they looked wet and AND they had been hot. Hmmm. :roll:

I always thought it was #3 & #5 that were the problem areas? I know my #3 pistons always are the worst when I do a rebuild.

I know this is a little off topic...
When buying head gaskets for a SyTy what things do you want to consider. For example, will it make a difference that I have brodix heads, and can you reuse APR head stud bolts?

i dunno about the 4.3' s blowing head gaskets but .. I would think you have had some serious knock to blow a head gasket on one of these engines due to them having 5 bolts per cyl.

When using the cometics and studs you really need to try an keep the knock down. cause the next thing that you break will not be a gasket! piston's or rods maybe more....


On my GN i still use the stock headgasket and arp studs.Still using the stock headgasket is better than breaking the bottom end. I blew one about 2 yrs ago due to a faulty WG and saw boost in the 29-30 psi range on 104 octane oops:rant: but it didn't hurt anything else. had the headgasket not have failed i'm for certain the rod or piston would had.

I have seen 32 psi. myself On A friends mustang that runs 8.00 @ 180 mph.

Depends a lot on how are you reading them. If you're making a few passes, driving back to the pits, and pulling the plugs and just looking at the surface, it's not likely doing you much good.

If you're reading fire rings deep down in the porcelain, carry on...

Does the fel pro need to be re torqued? and does the 522sd only come in the 4.00 bore size I have a 40 over stock block will the 522sd work for me.

You should be fine with 40 over, mines 30 over and there was still room.
