2nd Gen front brake swap with ABS

Like most of you I found the stock brakes to be less than adequate to say the least. I wanted dual piston calipers while retaining the ABS and the use of the 15" spare tire if needed.

This is what I had

This is what I have now

This is what I used.
I picked up the knuckles and caliper brackets at a local salvage yard and bought the rest of the parts at Autozone except for the dust shields which I got through GM and the caliper bracket to knuckle bolts that I picked up at the hardware store.
I used parts for a 2000 s10 4x4 (my daily driver) from the knuckle out including the hubs which have the ABS sensor and reluctor ring contained inside the hub.

Very nice info. I have been wondering this also. How much into it you think?

Knuckles and caliper brackets cost me $85
Dust shields cost $90.45
The rest from Autozone was around $500 with $60 core charge on the calipers

I like this mod. This may be a project I'm gonna do later, but I do have a question about the CV axles. Do the ball joints have to be changed or do you keep the Ty ball joints? Do the splines match with the hub for the 2000 S10 4x4? I'm guessing they do since you don't mention anything about having to change the CV axles.

With bigger front brakes you can always put the spare on the back and move the rear wheel to the front.

This is one of the reasons for using these brakes. If I blow a front tire on the way to Nats, I don't want to look like a monkey effin a football on the side of the interstate playing musical tires.

I want to go this route myself. I loved the dual front and rear disc setup on my 2nd gen blazer. It stopped so much better than the Ty.

So I am assuming this upgrade fits behind stock wheels? I have been looking at upgrading the brakes and I am looking for a set of stock wheels so I don't want to run into clearance issues.

What is the holding power of these compared to LS1 or bigger? how much of a differance in size are these compare to LS1? I have thought aboutthis before, but wondered. If they are the same or really close to LS1, this would a nice option.

I haven't had a chance to really test them out as the winter here seems like it's never gonna end. In the little bit I have driven since the swap I can say there is a noticeable improvement. As far as the size of them the rotor is 10.75" and LS1 is 11.92", I haven't compared the calipers to LS1 or the pads but I would guess it to be a minimal difference since the rotor size would be the main advantage of the comparison.

Turbotoyz: I'm still working on the rear. I'm kinda stumped on the ABS since our trucks use a 4 channel system and the 2nd gen uses the VSS for the rear input. (ABS guru chime in here please) If it wasn't for that I would try to find a rear axle like the one under my 2000, however I haven't seen any in the local junkyard.

Don't mind the rusted away dust shield.

Actually, unless I'm mistaken, our trucks DO use a VSS for the rear speed input since it doesn't have ABS tone rings like the front hubs do. I'm almost certain there is a VSS sensor in the transfer case.

93 have a 3 channel ABS with the sensor in the transfer case. 91 Sy & 92 Ty have 4 channel ABS with the ABS sensors at the rear axles.

Ahhhh, OK. Got it. Something I did not know. Thanks for setting me straight.
