air conditioning imput

What does a conversion entail? Still on R12. Bought a can of 134a to do a recharge and still has old fittings.

Nothing is probably even inside system. Can I introduce this 134a to the system or what?

Re: air conditioning imput

Change out compressor or change out oil in old compressor.Change out pressure switches .New seals for compressor.pull a vacuum and charge a/c with R134 refrigerant

No need to change the compressor. No need to change the pressure switches. Take care of any obvious leaks. Get the 134a conversion fittings. Have the system vacuumed and charge 32 oz 134a.

I just did this. An interesting observation occurred. When we fired everything up the compressor would just cycle on and off. After some research it appeared to be a low side pressure issue. Upon removal of the pressure sw (no evac required, there is Schrader valve) I found the switch was adjustable. One full turn out (presumably reducing the pressure required) and all was well.

Just use in a drop in replacement like freeze 12. It works a lot better then 134.

First of all R12 and R134 use a different lubricant oil.If oil doesn't get changed possible compressor failure can occur. R134 runs at a different pressure. That could be just the low side switch adjusting or replacing? Not sure waiting to convert mine have new compressor and seals and oil for ccompressor.

Re: air conditioning imput

I called local parts store and they have the fittings to adapt. They said there is 2. I really don't think there is any type of charge in the system being at some point the motor was rebuilt and most likely the lines were cracked and charge leaked out. I ran it on max ac for like 5 minutes and it was hotter than hell. Did not hear compressor Click or engage. I noticed the typhoon is very hot inside, most likely because there is more surface area of black up top.

I did do some research and read something about a POE oil which is compatible with both refrigants. I looked but could not find.

In an optimum setting you are correct. They do use different oil. I used to do half a dozen conversions a year. Its less common now that nearly everything is 134a. Have never changed the compressor or oil. My mothers 87 Marquis went 135k on a conversion I did and the car had 230k on the compressor when the clutch finally failed.

Wow on the car you did the conversion on that Is awesome! 230k before clutch finally failed

Re: air conditioning imput

Converted an old sonoma years back, bought new compressor, fittings, o-rings, accumulator, vacuumed the system, worked great for one summer and blew a hole in the evaporator. If I bought a lifetime supply of R-12 before they stopped selling it, it still would have been cheaper...

Re: air conditioning imput

Well I bought the adapters. Funny $hit is on pack is says works on most vehicles (except some GM 91-94??) Ugh wtf.

Was one of them things do I waste my money again.. Wondering if I open pack and it become not returnable.. I just opened it anyway. They threaded right on. I fogred the truck up put ac on hi and started pumping some new stuff in. Instantly the compressor engaged. Gauge was fluctuating. Big hole in line down by turbo. Little evap line.
