Alternator not charging

Re: Alternator not charging

Take a test light and see if it "lights" when you touch the B+ stud on the back of the Alternator. Truck doesn't need to be running for this test. If yes, then unplug the 2 wire connector and with the ign ON see if the test light "lights" when you touch the terminals.

And, while I understand the logic behind disconnecting the battery on a running car, this is old skool logic, and a VERY dangerous test. Doing this on any vehicle that runs an ECM runs the risk if a voltage spike that can easily fry circuits. An alternator is capable of producing well over 50 volts...

Ok I get 12v at the B+ of alternator with ignition on and get 12v at connector for pink wore and get negative on the brown or black wire at connector

Ya, it's got a Turbo
Re: Alternator not charging

How did you determine that you had 11.99 volts? A DVOM on the battery? If you've got voltage at both of the above points then it should be charging. Put a meter on the battery, take the reading, and then start the truck and take another reading....

I have a power probe tool

Some how I knew Dave knew the answer lol and yes on the alternator connector there PLFS on it

So I have to go get an alternator with different regulator ?

Or permanently jump my harness with a #194 bulb?

Re: Alternator not charging

Just remove the alternator and carry around a couple spare batteries in the back. :)

I get 12v not running and 14v running. Is it the correct alternator?

Well I'm not sure Davep took his original post off so I can't refer back to it and my alternator does have PLFS on it and I'm not sure how to do the side marker procedure I tried jumping just the harness with the side marker bulb and it lit up but alternator was still not charging was just getting 12v with truck running

Does your alternator hum/buz when the key is in the on position? It should, this is the wire to excite the field, which tells the alternator to make full voltage. Otherwise it will only make the base amount, 9-10V and will cause dead batteries. The plug on the alt on our trucks have either one or two wires, a brown and a pink black. If the connection is poor, it will not buzz. I've seen this on a bunch of trucks. Move that connector and see if you can get the alt to hum with the key on. You may have to replace that plug, its available at most parts stores, splice it to your wires, etc, and make sure there is a good contact. I've seen most of the problems there with that plug and the spade/socket. Hope that helps.

I will look for that today when I get back home from work

Re: Alternator not charging

They aren't all bad, I have one on my Durango and it'd been going strong for 4 years now.

I take this back. I actually have only had mine since January 2013,and it just crapped out on us in th3 middle of a 250 mile, one way, trip to the in laws. At least there was an AutoZone near by, but I had to buy more tools to swap it out.

Re: Alternator not charging

JoveDios what was the conclusion to Your alternator issue?

Was messing around with it and cut the brown wire coming out the alternator connector harness and it started charging so I left it like that for now I think there's a short on the wire going to the cluster but I'm not sure but right now she's charging at 13.9v with that brown wire open
