Please add any other valuable info related to testing the viscous clutch to this thread as it is headed for the vault for SURE!

Thanks to all have provided input!

This one is goin in the books.

well at least one good thing came out of me blowing my transfer case. although if you can not get it to operating temp, i wonder what kind of time differences you will get?

Re: big problems

If you knew what fluid was in it and you worked out the torque at the temp mentioned, you could then take the known viscosity at the ambient temperature and extrapolate.

Re: big problems

The tool won't work on our T-case.

Looking at the picture of the T-case, and the tool, and the instruction that says "remove front driveshaft" but says nothing about removing the front output flange, I think the instructions are for a NV case used in late-model trucks. They don't have front output flanges.

But I think the instructions are still valid. Including the 100ft lbs figure, and the minimum 10seconds to turn the front output 90º. That's inline with what I've found checking them over the years.

I read the attachment from the Denali forums (because I can't see the one JSTBLZ posted because I'm at work and it's filtered)

The torque spec listed for the NV149 is 11 n-m (100 lb in). That converts to 8.33 ft-lbs, which is a pretty small value.

So, my question is this: What torque value should be used for the BW4472? 100 in lbs seems mighty low (to me), is it a reasonable number?

Re: big problems

Thanks Dave.

A "Good" torque value from a known good box would be great!

And you're right, if we're going to have this in the vault, lets have it be correct (to the best of our collective abilities).

Re: big problems

Oh awesome. I know the test wasn't for the BW4472, but I posted it figuring the testing method would be similar. Good call JustDreamin. Maybe this could be labeled "How to check for a good tcase".

Re: big problems

Many Thanks DaveP ! ! !

Thanks for taking the time to do some experimental testing and come up with a realistic number for the BW4472. That will certainly take some of the guesswork out.
