boost control with PTE turbo's

how good is the wastegate on the pte turbo's.
right now i am getting boost spikes with open exhaust. i am thinking of an external gate. but if i can get good boost control out of the pte WG then i will just do that. i have an ultimate and the stock solenoid. would a muffler stop the boost spikes?
what do you guys think

im running a 52 with open DP.

right now, im running boost off the wastegate alone, no solenoid. Aside from ignition breaking up and getting knock, ive got a pretty solid 17.5-18psi, with no spikes.

I am running a PTE60 with Blitz SBC-Id boost controller. Boost is dead flat at 15 on up to 20 psi. Boost gets a little wavy (+/- 0.5 psi) at 24 psi. I would call that pretty darn good for an internal gate.

I have a TE-62, SMC Alky kit, and on just the internal wastegate and it is fine up to 20 psi, but when i hit the electric exhaust cutout I can shoot up to 24 psi real quick before the ignition starts popping and i have to back out of it

I am looking at an external wastegate now

Good Luck

Mine will jump 3-4 psi with the dump open. This is because of less back pressure on the turbo. I don't think an external w/g will solve this problem. A w/g adjustment for the open exhaust will. I just lower the boost 4 psi with my controller with the dump open.

The PTE integral *can* work very well, but this requires 2 things, IMO.

1- proper wastegate adjustment

You can't go adjust the wastegate, then change your backpressure (yank off the exhaust, open dump or whatever) and expect the boost level to remain the same. Adjust your wastegate under the same conditions you will run the truck, ie dump open.

2- wastegate oriface porting

The PTE setup really has a good combination of a low back pressure turbine housing & downpipe. It makes things very easy for the wastegate. Unfortunately, the location of that oriface is not ideal for controlling boost. You have to make it *easier* for the exhaust to vent at that oriface. I'm not sure why PTE doesn't do this. It seems everyone who's had good luck with the integral wastegate setups ports the oriface, no matter what make of turbo we are talking about.

Lastly, the stock computer CAN control a PTE setup, it CAN control an external gate. It requires some chip calibration, and proper vacuum line setup on the wastegate.
