Works like a momentary switch in that forward pedal movement depresses a button that completes the circuit....sending power to the brake lights. Lifting off of pedal releases button and breaks circuit. There is usually a fair degree of slop in the early GM designs, so you may be able to adjust it out. Otherwise, go grab a new one locally....they're pretty cheap.
I had the SAME EXACT problem. Probably from me stomping the pedal thru the floor for launches. Anyway, I loosened the adjuster nut on the brake pedal and moved it out just a bit and that was enough to fix the problem. Basically exactly what Hood just said.
Thanks guys for all your tips. Mike C. what did you use to bend the bracket?
I replaced the stoplight switch as suggested and worked fine for awhile but the problem is back again. Changed it twice but I think it's the way I installed it that's causing a problem.
Is the proper slower way to screw it in? ( which I didn't) or is the faster, easier proper way the push the switch in until it's where you want it technique? (my way)? The latter way is the way I did it but what happens is when pushing the switch through the bracket the cheapy threads on the switch break allowing the brake pedal to push the switch back. That's my theory anyway after 2 replaced switches. What do you guys think?
