Bringing her back...

By pure chance I noticed an auction with a Syclone. I dropped by a half hour early to take a look and tried to talk myself out of another project, but the little devil whispered in my ear that it saw a monoleaf conversion, battery relocation, A2A intercooler and piping, MSD coil, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, cold air intake kit and full 3 inch exhaust. The angel on my other shoulder slapped me in the head and stated that it was smacked in the front, and would need not only new sheet metal, but cladding repairs and who knows what else as well. The devil smacked the angel off my shoulder and said that the bumper, while hit, did not take a real hit and the frame horn and bumper mounts looked just fine. With little time left, I started "negotiating" with the auctioneer. I waived to the auctioneer that it was just getting too expensive and somehow I now owned it. ;)

Ebay happened to have a bumper and cover being auctioned as well (and I won for once), there was a mint, 2wd shortbed S10 for 300 bucks on craigslist and my trailer was empty, So there I was shoving my wife's rig outside and removing the front clip from the S10 donor.

An hour or so of work was also put into the Sy last night so that I could get that front clip off tonight, which worked out well. I am going to have to paint the intercooler piping black. The red reminded me of red wiring loom.

I also found out it just had a new engine installed this fall as well. I need to find out what compression/pistons he used and if it was the original block or if it was some "rebuilder special". If it checks out good, then I'll just replace the water pump for good measure, since the fan hit the radiator and start cleaning the engine and components up. The radiator support looks correct, except the opening for the radiator is a little smaller. I fill remedy that before I sand and paint the support. Anybody think there will be a problem running a 84 4 banger core?

S10 core supports were reconfigured in 91 to accept the one piece grille. So ya,I see a problem.

Oh and welcome and good luck.

The front bumper cover looks perfectly fine from that picture. Is that the replacement piece? It must be.

Welcome and good luck. It is always good to see one saved from scrap.

Great to see someone who goes against conventional wisdom and buys a project.....I like the cut of your jib sir. Looking forward to more pics of the progress.

Re: Bringing her back...

Sir Jimmy ruined my morning. ;) Of course the support won't work (or the left fender) due to the changes for the grille. I looked at making the necessary changes, but it's easier to dissasemble the fender and radiator support out of a correct one.

I didn't place a toilet close enough to the garage to attempt any disassembly today due to the flu, but I did use the time to research tuning options and thus electronically emptied my wallet on an ostrich and TunerPro RT pro setup.

In good news, I was able to contact the previous owner who gave me the run-down on the rig. He purchased it less than a year ago. The new motor has less than 600 miles on it with SS valves and upgraded springs. It has a 10-1 chip in it. I'm going to buy him lunch and talk Syclone this week with him and pick up the owner's manual.

My needs: Radiator, fan shroud, water pump, serp belt, oil cooler to radiator hoses, P/S pressure hose and grille. Oh yes, a radiator core support and left fender. Bumper and cover are on the way.

I need to research the proper painting of the cladding to get an OEM look.

The bumper in the picture IS the damaged one. The left corner is broken to bits, but I guess you can't see it from the picture.

Re: Bringing her back...

Sy # 1693

I ordered a new radiator support from a buddy at the dealer. I'm working on purchasing the other needed parts right now.

I was looking at fenders (unavailable new) at the salvage yard and they have one from an 87 S10B that has the right grille holder for $45. If it wasn't -10 below and (me still down with the flu) I would be unbolting it right now. ;)

Fenders should still be available in the aftermarket. GM ones, I don't know. I bought some new GM ones a few years ago for my Ty to the tune of $400-500/ea. Can't find the receipts right now. Aftermarket ones at the time were around $100/ea.

Re: Bringing her back...

Aftermarket will fit like crap. just get some used ones from a yard or Ebay. :2cents:

My thought as well. It seemed like I needed a 91-93 fender, but this one looks just like the original, without the oil filter housing bracket. I can handle that easily enough.

Bolt holes line up. Has the Grille tab for the bottom of the grille. The core support was different for sure, so I just ordered one from the dealer for $108.

Re: Bringing her back...

Notice the "cash for clunkers" sticker up on the air intake hose. Obama's GM bailout = sweet straight fender for me!

On second thought, lets not get into a political discussion about that.

Re: Bringing her back...

My new radiator support came in as did the front bumper and cover that I won on ebay. The bumper is in nice shape. It even came with the front marker lights and outer bumper braces. The tuning components are here as well.

I don't like how the A2A intercooler lines are run, plus they require hacking up the inner fender, so I think I'll reroute those.

I need to figure out the tubing size for the ABS delete (I am a firm believer in the lack of stopping power of ABS) and make up a factory looking reroute.

I believe I will be removing the engine oil cooler as well. I have had to replace way too many of these lines up here when it gets cold It looks terrible and uses space that would better be served by the radiator overflow bottle. If I were to road race it, land speed race it or such I would keep it, but we hardly hit 80 outside during the summer, and the other 360 days are significantly colder than that. ;) There is more harm here in not letting it get warm than the other way around.

My next decision is which WBO2/Gauge/Pod setup. I only want boost and WBO2 in the pod, as I will be logging pre and post intercooler temps on the laptop. I haven't seen any posts or specs (SyTy) on this yet and am very curious. Fuel pressure would be the only one that I would like to add, but I can see the effects and diagnose it if needed. Im thinkin of running the PLX style gauges through my Iphone so that the interior is cleaner, but half the time I'm too lazy to hook up the thing and it sits in my pocket.

Re: Bringing her back...

I pulled the ABS module, wiring harness to all the sensors and tubing. I need to run to the parts store get, some lines, run by my work and get my tube flaring/bending kit.I'll leave the sensors in place until I to a front brake job/rear brake job respectively. The ABS had a relay inline that used a green/white wire as a signal. I need to bring home a wiring diagram for this rig. Maybe it was used to deactivate the ABS. While I was removing harness, I removed an unused harness down by the intercooler. A single wire connector and a double wire connector. I'll have to chase these down, but perhaps that is where the cooler pump was located? Anyways, that harness was pulled as well.

I also removed the oil cooler assembly. The adapter will be here in a few days and I'll change the oil and install the new filter.

I need to spend a few hours and get the garage cleaned back up so I can work more efficiently. All my tools are still packed up from my last wheeling trip.

Re: Bringing her back...

Was the old bumper and support damaged badly? If it isn't too bad and you want to get rid of it. let me know. I don't mind having to bend one back into shape
