How much do you want to spend on dinner? It makes huge difference when trying to choose a restaurant in philly.

Well its a trip for work, and I dont have a limit on my expense account (love sales!!!) So the sky is the limit. With that in mind Im not a huge fan of foods I cannot pronounce. Great steaks, taverns and old historical restaurants are big on my list. Thanks

I personally think the steaks are best in Manayunk at a place called Jakes. Its about $30 for the filet, but free to you. Right next door to Jakes, is Kansas City Prime, which is also very good and comparably priced.

Then in downtown philly you have Ruth's Chris which you can never go wrong at.

Do not go to Engine 46 Steakhouse (near south Penns Landing)- its horrible. I wasn't impressed with Capitol Grille either on Broad street, but others seem to like it.

Probably the most noted restaurant in philly is Le Bec Fin, which is a french cuisine place, but is incredible. Also probably the most expensive place in philly, and sometimes tough to get a reservation. BUT, they have a bar downstairs that you can get in pretty readily, and only get about 1/2 the selection of the regular menu. Its called Le Bar Lionnaisse (sp?). I definitely recommend this if you don't get to philly often and are having a meal paid for.

be sure to go to geno's steaks and pat's i think.. awesome philly cheese steaks.
They damn well should be, its where the sandwich was invented. I wouldn't recommend walking around that particular area of Philly though, especially at night.

What? philly is fine to walk around, just stay away from west philly at night.

Heard all about Geno's and Pat's from our service guys... those will be my stops on the way out of town. Thanks for the info Renz... are you like the unofficial mayor of Philly or what? :D

Any other suggestions please chime in... my trip may be extended through Friday and its always good to have choices.

I like the Old City section for restaurants and nightlife. Serrano's is good, though a bit noisy. Spice (Indian cuisine) is good. Chinatown section has some of the best Chinese restaurants on the east coast. Over by U of P, "Pod" restaurant is an interesting (and expensive) place. White Dog Cafe is good for lunch...try to ignore political overtones. :-?

the best steak place imho is up in NE Philly. Called Steve Prince of Steaks. I've prolly eaten about 50 steaks from them - always the same thing: Pizza American Without (pizza steak, american cheese, no onion)
You need to understand how to order a cheesesteak in philly to not look like such an outsider. :)

Mayor? no....just have spent a lot of time there over the past few years. I dated a girl from philly for 1.5yrs, and i've had steady work down there for the past 5 years. Less now then before, but i used to be down there almost every week - always trying new places.

Another great restaurant on South Street is San Carlo. Its a small place hiding just off of South street adjacent to Bridget Foy's. Quaint and very reasonably priced ($12-15 entrees). Great date place. If you like tiramisu, go to San Carlo.

I agree with Mike...the best cheesesteak in town is Steve's Prince (no relation). Forget Pats and Genos, if you're anywhere near NE Philly (my old neighborhood), get to Steve's.

Oh, what's that old restaurant near Rittenhouse Square? Colonial themed...supposedly George Washington dined there. Talk about "historical." The name eludes me at the moment. Is is City Tavern?

The ordering is key so you dont look like an outsider. Same thing @ Kelly's on Revere Beach... you either do it right or you get the "wtf are you doing here look" So how would you order a steak w/ american cheese, onions, mushrooms and peppers?

I never realized that, I always though you just needed to show up with Gold chains, Big haired girl friend, and the right accent.

at steve's....you'd say "american with; shrooms and peppers" most places that'd just be the works or w/ everything.

Steves has a counter full of peppers, so usually people don't get peppers on their steaks there, but add them themselves. They have great pickles there too.

Dave... if you show up like that at Kelly's your a-ok. I usually carry extra gold chains for my out-of town buddies.
