my truck has metal rings that crimp around each vaccum to hold them in place. i assume that these are stock, because the truck was not modified in any way when i got it. is it necessary to replace these? if so, where can i get them?

Yeah those crimp on connectors are stock equipment.

Most folks get rid of the hard plastic brittle vac line and put in the rubber or silicon and use the small zip ties instead of the crimp on bands.

No problems, in fact its probbaly a better setup than stock.

If you replace them with silicone lines, you can also get rid of the elbows near the boost control solenoid, which can crack or bottom out the plastic lines, screwing up your boost control...

If you can, replace it. That 90 degree boot can hide a crack in it quite well.. I had a fluctuating boost problem that I fixed when I replaced the vac lines from the turbo housing to the boost solenoid, and from the boost solenoid to the wastegate actuator.. best $4 I ever spent.
