Hey guys,

Tragically, the turbocharger took a dive in my '92 Typhoon last week so I devoted this entire weekend to repairing the sickly snail. Fun times! For those of you who are interested I have decided to post up an informative walk-through on the removal & installation process:

**Reference Materials**
'92 Typhoon Turbo diagram To view the diagram, click on 'Get Info' button underneath the Parts Listing tab. Then click 'Go' and the diagram displays in a separate window.

1) Drain the engine cooling system, then remove the air intake duct and the turbocharger air intake duct.

2) Disconnect the negative battery cable, followed by the positive cable from the battery.

3) Loosen the battery hold-down clamp and remove the battery from the vehicle.

4) Remove the battery tray and vacuum tank.

5) Remove the nut and disconnect the turbocharger oil feed line, then disengage the electrical connector from the solenoid.

6) Loosen the turbocharger coolant return line clamp nut, then disconnect the coolant return line assembly.

7) Raise and support the front of the truck safely using jack stands.

8) Remove the right tire and wheel, then remove the wheelhouse panel retaining screws and remove the panel for access.

9) If necessary, disengage the oxygen sensor electrical connector, then remove the nut from the turbocharger and the bolt from the outlet pipe support bracket. Remove the clamp from the catalytic converter and bolts from the converter support, then remove the turbocharger outlet pipe.

10) Remove the retaining bolts from the turbocharger oil return pipe, then remove the return pipe and gasket from the turbocharger assembly.

11) Remove the turbocharger mounting nuts.

12) Disconnect the coolant feed line from the turbocharger, then remove the turbocharger assembly.

13) Inspect and clean the turbocharger and manifold mounting surfaces.

14) Position the turbocharger, then connect the coolant feed pipe with gaskets and loosely install the bolt.

15) Loosely install the turbocharger mounting nuts followed by the oil feed pipe line fitting.

16) Tighten the coolant feed pipe bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm), then the turbocharger mounting nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) and the oil feed line fitting to 13 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).

17) Connect the turbocharger oil return pipe and gaskets, then tighten the line bolt to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).

18) Connect the turbocharger coolant return line assembly and tighten the line nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Secure the coolant return line clamp and tighten to 16 inch lbs. (1.8 Nm).

19) Install the turbocharger outlet pipe to the catalytic converter and turbocharger. Install the nuts to the turbocharger, then clamp to the converter, the bolts to the converter support and the bolt to the outlet pipe bracket. Tighten the turbocharger nuts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm), the converter clamp nuts to 42 ft. lbs. (57 Nm), the support bracket bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) and the converter support bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).

20) If disengaged, connect the oxygen sensor wiring to the harness.

21) Install the wheelhousing panel, then install the tire and wheel assembly. Remove the jack stands and carefully lower the vehicle.

22) Engage the turbocharger solenoid electrical connector.

23) Install the battery tray and vacuum tank.

24) Install the battery and secure using the hold-down clamp.

25) Install the air intake duct and the turbocharger air intake duct.

26) Connect the positive cable, then the negative cable to the battery.

27) Properly refill the engine cooling system.

This is the entire procedure in all of its gory glory. This is a bit of a PITA so good luck to all who undertakes the job!

You left out the 4 cans of pb blaster that you're gonna need.

Typically a short wrench is needed to get one of the turbo housing nuts off. You will need to double up the wrench. A regular size wrench gets in the way of the shock tower.

Ugh i am not looking forward to pulling my turbo and manifolds off for the vortec heads. I'll post any tips and tricks i learn along the way.

HAHAHA!! I did this this morning to my wife's Ty. I was motivated after watching a fellow SYTY guy get his Ty dyno tuned yesterday which I tried to help out with. At any rate, after hanging out with the tuner for about an hour it made me want to face the housing issue I have on the wife's TY. Basically, it feels gutless ever since I put this turbo on it which is a 20g. The 20g I had from Ry's Sy was the shit and I ended up destroying it. So I bought another one about a year ago and the truck has just never felt the same since.

I am convinced it is due to the housings. This turbo would make a weird whooing sound under medium boost, weird as hell. So I popped the turbo off this morning and swapped housings. Fixed it, truck feels great now! From start to finish I had 2.5hours in the whole job. FWIW, I think you should remove the AC bracket as well. It is WAY easier.

1-Air intake
2-Fand shroud then fan
3-belt/pulley
4-battery and tray
5-Upper IC and hose
6-Idlerpulley on AC bracket
7-AC bracket
8-all turbo fluid lines
9-Wheel and wheel well
10-DP bolts
11-4 turbo nuts

I had the turbo off all the way in about 50 minutes. Piece of cake brotha. Don't waste your time draining all the engine coolant, bonehead move if you ask me. If you have a hard time getting the AC bracket off, remember to pull the studs after you remove the nuts and the lower bolt is easily removed by pulling up on the lower radiator hose.

Good luck buddy!

Highlighted for truthiness. Didn't need a stubby.

When I change out my turbo last year I followed this minus Steps 1-3, on step 5 I just remove the hose, Steps 6-7. I only drain the coolant down below the turbo level. Using all hand tools, no air at the time, time was 3 hours start to finish. Make sure to do a oil change when you are done. you don't want that bad oil going though the engine.

Just curious what was wrong with the housings?

Compressor & turbine housings were bad?

Re: DIY- Replacing the Turbocharger in a '92 Typhoon

Hello everyone! I am new to the forum and find myself facing a turbo rebuild on my Syclone.

This job does not look much fun, but I am up for the challenge. Other than the steps above what do I need in terms of replacement gaskets for the oil, coolant, and exhaust flanges?

If anyone has additional pictures please send a link. Thank you in advance for your time and words of wisdom.

Re: DIY- Replacing the Turbocharger in a '92 Typhoon

One thing I did not see. Use never-seize on the manifold to turbo nuts and on the nuts/bolts for the DP. When next time comes, and it will, things will be much easier. I also agree that removing the AC support is worth it if not mandatory. You can leave the AC compressor connected. If you look around you can find the copper washers that seal the water line at the banjo fitting. Bet you loose the inner one... :) Unless it makes it to the floor.

:2cents: If the turbo coolant drain line has never been touched you will want to attempt to replace that lower hose. After 25 years it's probably in rather poor shape, Tough but beats burning up an engine when it does fail.

steps above pretty much cover it. only thing I see missing is some beer and a punching bag so when you get mad you got something a beat the crap out of instead of the truck

If you have a source for the washers, please let me know. Thanks for the advice on the coolant drain. I will check it out.

I found them at a local parts store on one of those racks that have that kind of stuff just hanging there. Just have an original with you or the bolt so you get the correct size.

Getting the remainder of that water line off is a chore but can be done. I've never attempted to replace that hose "in-place" but that might be an option.
