DO NOT adjust ZQ8 box!!!

I adjusted my box about 6 months ago trying to figure out how to get rid of steering slop. For one, I just bought the damn thing from GM in June of 07. There was a tag on there that said not but I just couldn't get rid of the play so I went ahead and made sure it was tight. Well, I turned it in about a 1/2 turn or so. Then I tried it again when I installed my new steering shaft bushing. Well, yesterday, I was on my way to a car show and about a mile form my house, I went to make a left turn and the steering locked!! I almost went in to the other side of the road but jerked the wheel back and un-locked it. I was able to get the truck back home going about 10 mph. I could turn the wheel an easy half turn without the wheels moving. It was pretty scary. So when I took it back to my friend that sold it to me at Gm, he asked me if i adjusted that screw and I said no  He told me that is the only thing that can cause this but he took it back anyway. So word of warning, don't touch the adjustment screw.

Re: DO NOT adjust ZQ8 box!!!

I tried adjusting one once and I ruined it. I think I overtightened it as the steering would not return to center.. So I then loosened it back up to where it originally was and it then had a ton of slop. Learning sucks sometimes esp. when it costs money. Glad you didn't get hurt when the steering locked.

I did it on my Vette and never had any issues so I thought, what could it hurt? Live and learn.

Its amazing that your truck is still in one piece! With all the problems you have, you still manage to get it home, intact, almost everytime! :rotf:

I did it with my old 1990 GTA box with no problems, drove it for years afterwards, including running windy roads and an autocross.

I think ill keep away from doing that now and leave it up to shops

been there, done that... fortunately mine locked up while it was on a lift getting inspected ;)

Anyway, got a new box and haven't touched it. Best thing I've done to my steering

Re: DO NOT adjust ZQ8 box!!!

You can pull them out of any 2wd S10 with the Zq8 handling package.

They can be had fairly cheap if you go to the yard and pull it yourself.

You just need to swap the 2wd pitman arm for a 4wd. those are different for sure.
Everything else bolts right up.
