draining freon

Maybe a naiive question, but from where do you drain the freon? Is there an actual drain/plug anywhere underneath?

Shop said they can't drain it unless the AC is malfunctioning. Is it a big deal to drain it? I know the legal ramifications, but I mean effort wise. What can I tell a shop to get around this?

Tell them you are making modifications that require the a/c condenser to be removed or tell them you are pulling the motor and the a/c needs to be removed. I think if they are made aware that the system is to be "broken open" that it legally binds them to evacuate the system. Besides, the r12 freon is like gold. They should want to reclaim it. If you shop doesn't want to do it, go elsewhere. Most body shops have the equipment also. Try to make a deal with the people who reclaim it. If you want to recharge the system in the future, work a discount on the new freon as you just donated some to them.

To remove the freon out of the a/c system you need an a/c machine that will suck the freon out of the system due to that it's against the law to let freon out in the air and it's under very high pressure (about 100psi), today i think the price on R12 is about $3-4/oz, and our system holds 2.5lbs.

There's a port on the receiver drier, take off the cap and use a small screwdriver to press down the pin, just like letting the air out of a bicycle tire.

Freon can cause blindness. Be very carefull if you just dump it in your drive way. Or do the right thing and get a shop to drain it.

There is a $10,000 dollar fine for letting freon go to atmosphere on purpose (if you get caught), r12 is like gold, like someone else said, your system holds about $120 worth @ $3 an ounce, the price is expected to go to about $5 an ounce this summer, if you can find it...Oh, and it will go to a gas at room temperature under no pressure outside a closed system... You need to go to a shop and get it reclaimed, maybe if they can get 2 lbs out of it, you could get $50 for it
