Dual exhaust

Re: Dual exhaust

Wasn't there a truck with side exiting exhaust? Like a side pipe, but it was molded into the cladding like an extension? I think it was white or red. (Solid). I remember seeing it, I am sure someone has a pic out there

I have a side exit at the rear wheel on my Sy, but mine doesn't go through the cladding.

I think you're talking about Gerbers white Ty?

Re: Dual exhaust

Just a thought.
Just about every "high performance" model of any European North American and Asian vehicle built has Dual exhaust. The engineers must know something.

2 1/2" + 2 1/2" = 5" that's 2" more breathing than I presently have.

Never mind it gives the truck a" balanced" look at the back,

Yeeeeaahhh doesn't really work that way.

You might get 1/3 more flow, but you'll end up with 2/3 more material (weight).

From a performance standpoint a single has a lot of advantages. What the "engineers know" is that a smaller dual will likely be quieter.

Re: Dual exhaust

40 years of messing with exhaust and hi-po engine configurations and I've NEVER heard a single exhaust system that sounded as good as duals with lots of flow.
Just what I've experienced.

I played with putting side exhaust on my Sy. Biggest problem was getting it around the frame and through the cladding. Guess you could notch the frame? But I didn't want to take the leap to do either. It hung waaaaay to low when routed under the frame/cladding.

I know you posted the comment a year ago.. but you are completely wrong.

A dual 2.5 inch exhaust has nearly the same flow rate as a single 3.5 inch and just a little more then a 3 inch, this is assuming equal length. Once you run a longer pipe from the passenger side of the truck to exit on the driver side rear you would be killing your flow even more and your single 3 inch would out flow your dual 2.5 inch.

Just an FYI: 1 large pizza (12") is more food then 2 small (8") pizzas.

Re: Dual exhaust

If I were messing with a purpose built sports or race car I might care about performance.
The Typhoon is a sports utility truck with a 4.3 litre 260cu in engine and a small turbo.
It performs just fine pulling around 3800 lbs in a truck body.
If you wanna race buy a race car
Thanks for all the input but no pics of typhoon dual installation.
Performance is a non issue for me.
5 or 10 horse up or down I don't care.
Extra pipe might weigh 10-15 lbs.
Filling your gas tank adds alot more than that
I will add duals,it will sound and look great.

Re: Dual exhaust

Mine was like this before went to single 3"

I don't know why you would change that dual set-up?
That was awesome!

I think duals are just for looks, they do not sound much different IMO( there is only one turbo), unless you are running two turbos , then it would sound better & IMO, it would require dual exhaust anyways.:2cents:

But to each their own.

So how do you like the LOOKS of the1 big 3" pipe

Re: Dual exhaust

Lets see a pic .

I had mine made so it's not noticeable, stealthy the way I like it. Don't like to be all blingy on certain things. To each their own as I say.

I tried the side exit and it looked good until you looked at it from the side, then it looked weird. I now have a "hidden" single exit exhaust. It looks clean I think.

Re: Dual exhaust

I couldn't find it but your post Dave reminded me of an old post about you liking pipe organs. This gave me a mental picture of you tuning exhaust notes with a slip pipe to get it perfect!

Now I have an idea for a new app... The exhaust tuning calculator! (too bad I don't have the skills to make it)

Re: Dual exhaust

I am just thinking about Buick GNs w/single & dual exhausts, (single turbo GN's & T-Types) from a distance @ a track running a 1/4 mile they sound similar, maybe I'm tone death, but I don't think so.:2cents:

Re: Dual exhaust

Just stick a turndown off the muffler on a single nothing to see sticking out. Just be a little louder in the cab.

Re: Dual exhaust

Done right I like duals. However in my opinion (which may or may not help):

  • I have an AWD LS7, custom long tub headers, mufflers, and 3" stainless exhaust to rear of vehicle.
  • You may want H-pipe or X-pipe to balance flow/sound (if you have the room).
  • Do use hangers and such or it will rattle or hang low (in the old days folks used scavenger pipes to hang low on purpose below rear axle)
  • Do watch your wires, fuel lines/filter/pump, and items underneath that dislike heat (bake lines, etc)
(in the old days dumps were attached at bends which leaked or rusted)
  • I'm not a fan of cutting up the bumper or duals under a valance (look) so mine exit the rear of tire at the sides like factory but I notice dodge trucks have notches in their bumpers
  • Do pay attention to the drone-noise (which can be horrible in a typhoon due to interior cavity) also floor board heat and/or exhaust fumes
  • Not a personal fan of rear tire front/cladding exiting (which requires cutting/fabricating), sometimes holes in the frame
  • Not a fan of cute exhaust tips but polished look is neat. I also dont have many pictures but I did find this one (from the back only a tiny 1" symmetrical look is visible of exhaust system, enough to keep cladding clean):

Re: Dual exhaust

Maybe it is just because I know Typhoons never came with duals but I think it would look odd. I like a single exhaust pipe or a no show. Mine dumps near where the factory location is but is cut at about the same height as the cladding so it is hard to see. I like the sound, I have a Borla muffler and full 3" from the headers back.

That is the look I like, I am old school.
Grew up with big block, solid lifter engines with massive dual pipes exiting behind tires similar to the duals in this pic.
