Famous propshaft question

After replacing boot on original propshaft it came off within a hundred miles....After reading as many posts as possible, I could get Autozone version(12-357..any opinion?), probably won't get NAPA(bad opinions from the posts)...would could consider Al Dustans versus Dynotech/ATR version.....I don't want to play around modifying anything/don't want to rebuild it..I am looking for vibration free propshaft...any opinions/are the more expensive ones worth it..Any good advice apppreciated...thanks..

Do some searching through offroad mags, and call one of those places.

Several of us have had heavy duty custom ones done for a couple hundred that don't break or have POS boot designs.

Here are two that come to mind.

Many of these places are familiar with the design of the Astro/Syty/Bravada shaft, and can give you something to take the abuse and not break for cheap (relatively). Do yourself a favor and get a propshaft loop while yer at it too.

One more question....I contacted the websites you listed...Do we have a round or square shaped surface where the CV bolts and what is the distance from face to phalange(26.5 in or 31.5 in--I guess not including the propshaft??) Thanks for your help.....

i remember reading a few members got one of brandons heavy duty props, and had no complaints! and is only $400! id be a lil leary about getting an offroad shaft made... i had one from a bravada in my sy that was supposed to be built, and the entire boot assembly and the bearings came apart after 12 launches. :evil:

i think brandons propshaft has gone on a permenant leave of absence. thats why i went with als. not that i have a single complaint.

Before I purchase Al Dustan's propshaft, have any of you tried Autozones front propshaft listed under CCT 1993 GMC #12-357? 162dollars...I found this listed unde the archives..Thanks

I can get a propshaft made for ya. It would be exaclty the same as the one used on TurboTonys truck. No CV joints just a front and rear u-joint. The shaft is a complete bolt on and fits with no mods. The price is $400. If you want I can take some pics of it for you.

That 12-357 is the same as the NAPA shaft. Whatever problem the Napa's have, it will have also. :evil:

I have the NAPA shaft and I have no vibration problems. Its been on my daily driver for about 4 months now. It also has Lifetime warrenty. Fern Sy#477

I am having the same problem. I just took mine off to put a 5000 rpm govenor in mine and ripped the boot by accident? Can the boot be replaced or is the shaft trash. Tommyquest where did you have it made I live in New Jersey and I am trying to have one built. Do you have any problems with it? Did it bolt right in?

This propshaft's OD is so big, you will have to cut and reweld the transmission range select lever. You will also have to remove the front mounting flange from the front differential. Piece of cake with a impact wrench and 32MM socket. It has zerk fittings front and rear for lubing the U-joints. No vibration at ANY speed up to and including 125 MPH. Cost me $318.60 delivered to my door. If anyone is interested, let me know...
