Re: FAST Miami Meet - 2010

So, interesting night already. We all cruised out to Homestead Raceway to go to some 1/8th mile racing. Everyone was doing passes, having a good time.

Gary takes his Sy down the track runs what looks to be a decent time. As he is coming down the pit lane, Dave Harris in his C5 vette lines up with a Viper. All eyes on the track. Dave pulls out on the viper and is leading by a length on him... viper shifts 3rd and brings the ass end around fully stays in the throttle and crosses lanes barely missing dave by inches and slams dead into the concrete wall. Viper flips around, entire front end is sheared off the car.

At the same time the Viper is hitting the wall, Gary is sitting in his truck getting his time slip and is directly behind the portion of wall that the viper hits. It was so hard of a hit, the wall actually moved about 10-15ft and slammed into Garys truck on the driver side. Even worse, a track official was behind that wall and he went flying head over heels. The track official heads off to the ER, Viper owner is alright... Dave is alright as well.

Initial damage to Garys truck looks to be fender, cladding, bumper, grille and rim. We get the truck back over to the pit and start looking deeper. Bent the lower control arm as well, core support is bent. Dig deeper... we see a bend in the propshaft and its touching the trans housing and diff. Look further... frame is kinked behind the wheel.

Pics will be up later. Thankfully no one was to seriously injured.... track official got a concusion I think....but Garys truck took a hard hit..and he wasnt even on the track.

We asked around for any vids, nothing turned up......yet. Plenty of pics taken, it was crazy for a bit. They hauled the viper off and dumped it in the grass....and I got a prize off it. ;)

That sounds scary. At least no one was hurt too seriously. Is/was Gary's truck a mint low mileage truck or a driver ? If it was mint that really sucks.

The retaining wall: ( the black dust on this side of the wall that moved the most is Gary's cladding)

Gary, I don't know how you didn't go pull him out of the viper. I sure would have.

Thats a shame. I was looking forward to meeting you. Do you need me to call your captain and get you a day off? I can be very persuasive.... " I'll make him an offer he cant refuse ".

I know. I wish I could have went. If I actually planned the use of force I got hurt in on the 17th to this week I could have made it, lol.

I'll be the one to ask, will it actually be covered by either his, or your insurance considering it was at a racing event.. Not sure what coverage you have on it Gary.

All's quiet.

It was suggested to me my Sy may have saved the track worker from more serious injury. His position was with his back to the track directing pit road traffic. As it was he did a backwards head over heels when the block hit him, but the truck absorbed the brunt of the impact. Truck can be fixed. Reports are he got a nasty bump on his head and a minor cut on his hand, they took him overnight to keep an eye on him. Alain had the best view, he was right behind me on pit lane.

Home.

Uneventful trip back. Truck ran really good on the way back thanks to Scott and his tuning. Still not perfect, but its 100% better than what it was driving down.

Other than that, I think I may have some motivation to do some wrenching on the Sy with some things.

To tired to go into anything else. Big thanks to Gary as always for hosting and letting us invade his house once again. Miami meet is by far my most favorite meet out of the year, always look forward to it.

Gary-Thanks again for everything!!! It was great to see everyone again. I'll second the thoughts on the great food.

I hope all works out with the truck Gary!! Seems like there was a line of people wanting things if it has to be parted out. Myself included!

Another successful meet at Gary's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: FAST Miami Meet - 2010

I'm finally back home after a very long and exhausting trip. A whole 1/2 hour trip back to the house from Gary's.:lol::p

Again thanks to Gary for everything and his willingness to help everyone out no matter what has happened. As proof of that was Friday night, and I'm not so sure about having the best view in the house but I had the second scariest view for sure......

Special thanks to Dan and Jeff for the great food.

It was great to see everyone that came down and I look forward to seeing everyone at the next meet.

Re: FAST Miami Meet - 2010

This my first time at my computer since thursday... even though I only live 7 miles from Gary.

I must say that this meet was everything I expected and more. Gary is by far THE most gracious host. Tim it right, said I would have pulled the Viper driver out of his car:chair:, But not Gary, he kept his cool.:squint:

For those who could not make it, all I can say is you missed a great time with a really fun bunch of people:cheers:. I personally am very greatful to Gary and everyone else who was there for all their help with my 5 cylinder smoke machine:banghead:. Special thanks to Jeremy for getting my keys out of my truck:idea:, Somi for the shower:haha:, Scott for identifying/fixing my fuel and dead cylinder issues:tup: and Dennis for the offer to help with my swap:thumbsup:. Last but not least Dave "The Mongoose" Harris for the most memorable race of the night.:woot:

As far as the food was concerned, Chef Jeff and I only hope we lived up the expectations of the group, as we had some big shoes to fill. Jeff said it was his pleasure to cook for such a cool group and would do it again. Maybe next time he will have a SyTy himself...

I am still waiting on a call back from the Syclone we found:dunno:. Noel called me last night and said he would track down all of the other SyTy's he knows and would pass them on to me. I will keep everyone posted.

Weekend notes

It IS possible to be just sitting there and have a wall jump out and hit you.

Much food consumed. Kudos to Jeff and Dan who did all the prep and cooking. All that was left were about 2 dozen wings, a little mac and cheese and 8 Sprites. The ribs and pork shoulder were gone fast. Great food.

Thanks to the people who brought coffee, breakfast sandwiches, beer and other munchies. I'm not sure who accounted for what but in a frenzied weekend it was much appreciated.

Thanks to those who cleaned up, I had very litttle to do afterwards.

No plumbing failures for the first tiime in three years.

I found a pair of childrens socks ( I narrowed it down to 3 suspects ) and someone left a wash mitt and a chamois. Claim them.

12 trucks, a Vette, a TTA, an Elise, a Lightning, two tow rigs and trailers, misc others

Two trucks tuned, many small things done, parts delivered and installed, trouble shooting and two other trucks in town tracked down and inspected. Both will appear soon in the Junkyard album.

Three sets of key locked in trucks. DaveP made some kind of jumper thingy with 2 drywall screws and a shorts piece of wire and opened his. I was afraid to ask how he learned that trick. Mike bent an antenna mast and opened Dennis' truck. I think I know how he learned that one. Best one goes to Dan, whose truck locks automatically, even if the keys are inside. After about ten minutes of oh no's, someone noticed his passenger side window was open.

DaveP gets the award for furthest driven, in from Cali. 2nd year in a row. I even had the replacement module to fix his cruise control for the long drive home.

Began the process of figuring what has to be done to fix my Sy, bodyman contacted and will check it tomorrow. Attorney contacted just in case, waiting now on the police report.

Car show was a circus but they came through with parking for the group.

Ian must live a charmed life.

Lotus Elise's are made of aluminum, composite and sand

Thanks to everyone who attended. An exhausting but very enjoyable weekend. I think once a few days pass I'll be ready to commit to next years.
