Okay, it's been done before a thousand times, but I've never really had an opportunity to hook one from a light. I've run plenty of imports, but never one that's done up in classic ricer style. Until last night....

On the way to class, looking for holes in traffic because I was running late. A Civic goes whipping past in a hole I was about to fill. Lowered, clears, rubber band tires, and the requisite HUUUUUUUGE fart can muffler. Sounded like a chainsaw when it went by. As fate would have it, we caught a light. I was behind him, which is cool, because wasting a boosted launch (if we had been side by side) would have been overkill. I knew he would go because he had to have noticed the Ty. The car next to him was just another one of NJ's comatose drivers, oblivious to the world around them. I figured, even in a Civic, he'd waste 'em and I could cut out around him. It all came together like I had hoped. Light turned green, I heard the chainsaw fire up, he made an opening, I went around. Chainsaw got loud as it was next to me, then faded off into the night. I took it up to about 70, which is what I typically cruise at anyway. He was so far back, I wasn't even sure which pair of headlights was his. He caught up eventually and rode my butt for a while, but didn't dare come around even when there was plenty of room.

I'm all for individual expresssion. If you want to do that to your Honda, great, but don't think for a minute that it's "fast". I don't know why it's so hard for them to understand.

i couldnt agree more jim!

it still blows me away at how much money these idiots throw down on those cars. i mean lets say its a brand new civic SI, ok right there youre lookin at at least 16k, after they throw on after market rims, tires, bookshelf wings, stickers, redo the interior in white leather, indiglo shit everywhere, fart mufflers, clear corners, altezzas, those lame ass windshield sprayer lights, and the classic NOS. theyre probably wasted well over 24000 dollars, and no matter what its still a piece of shit honda.

ok so nick took a ride in a 12.9 sec civic, and how much money did the guy waste gettin a lil 4banger into 12's? i spent 12k on my truck and it does mid 13's and i havent even done anything to it yet.

bottom line. 99% of all imports are all show and no go!

rant done.

my honda prelude does just fine against my typhoon (for now anyway)...just not off the line. Start from a roll and its even....start from 60 and the prelude walks away (too bad gmc didn't take aerodynamics into consideration). Its no ricer...typical mods w/o the altezzas, stickers, flying nun-looking wing, etc. Don't let all the 16 yr olds ruin the car.

prelude.jpg

(ok ok...got my flame retardent vest on....fire away)

Its far from a peice of shit. It has 107k on it and I trust is a hell of a lot more than my 98k typhoon. I've beat the shit out of it for 57k miles, and nothing has broken. A 4cyl na motor that can hang at all w/ the v6's and v8's is impressive in my book.

Im not a real fan of imports but will give thumbs up when its due. Thats a sweet lookin car. No stickers that I can see, tasteful wing, tasteful wheels, no clears, etc... Done up right but not "over" done..

Don see myself owning one but they just arent my "thing".. Still a nice lookin car. You have a Ty too so ya gotta be somewhat of a real "car guy". Prolly a little crazy too..

There's exceptions to every rule. I stand by my statement, though.

For every 100 clapped out, lowered, fart-canned Civics there's one nicely done, somewhat quick example. Just like for every 100 SyTys there's one really *fast* one. 12.9s is nothing to write home about, especially when you consider how much $ it took to get there. But it is quicker than most anything you'll run into on the road, and quicker than most Tys.

Again, if speed is the goal, I don't understand why someone would start with something that puts you at a HUGE disadvantage from the get go. But, to each his own. It's cool to see that there's still an interest in modifying cars today - regardless of what they do to them.

Case in point. The local Sunoco where I fill up all the time always has this really wild looking Civic there. Body kit is all in primer, and it has some really weird custom work. The most notable is the license plate recessed into the tail gate (it's a hatch model) at an angle. Last week, I finally asked the guy pumping the gas whose car it was. I wanted to tell him just how hideous it was. It was his. It was all he could talk about. He did all the bodywork himself - including the tailgate. All metal, no plastic - did all the welding and grinding himself. The tailgate alone must've taken hours and hours. Shaved door handles are next. He was very proud of it and it really changed my attitude toward ricers - or at least this one.

But, for some reason, I get great satisfaction from educating these guys at the stoplights. I don't know why. It's not that I've never been beaten by a Japanese car, nor that I never will be again, but it's still fun putting the poseurs in their place. If someone beats me, good for them. I'll be the first to admit that from a roll I've been beaten by everything from a Subaru to a Maxima to a 300ZX. But never a lowered, fart-canned, single-wipered Civic.

long winded, and probly useless.....

I bought my CRX about 6 months ago. 215k miles, everything works, and its the highly desireable "si".

thats a 16 second car new. To give you an idea about its condition, 15' wheels. Atempts made to fix fuel pump with a hammer, remote entry system failing, resulting in inability to open truck with key. exhaust is home brew, brospeed tip welded on (inside diameter is probly 2 inches, the exaust is probly 1 1/2", so the gap was filled in with a weld bead. Head light rusted out, no interior front behind the seats back. CD player as described in the ad was a portable cd player w/ tape converter to the stock head unit. Rear hatch (weighs about 90lbs) wont stay up withought putting vice grips on the hydrolic struts. Intake is a metal exhaust pipe, crimp bent with a K&N on the end. Not bad cheapo mod, except the metal pipe sits on the positive of the battery(sheilded by a pair of women's underware) and the K&N is getting holes in it from rubbing on sheet metal edges.

I bought it for an awesome price. Everything worked on the car with exception of the few stupid things I noted. I fixed everything necisary, and drive the beast everywhere. Its fun because it sticks to the road so much better then the sy.
Concidering my insurance total only went up like 30 bucks by adding it, I think its going to work out well.

I can replace the entire engine/transmission with an upgraded motor for less then 600 bucks. - that could shave 2 seconds off my 0-60 (mid 14s)

They are slow, everyone in an import feels they need to race it. I beat the crap outa an 88ish rx7, i found that hellarious.

I'll probly have altezza tails before too long (mine have faded from holding water) 75 bucks for a set of those, or 150 for a set stockers.

Im going to use it to learn how to paint/do body work. Gonna shave everything and paint it a nice metalic grey silver color.

i do have a motorex banner accross the front window, and a set of indiglo gauges. Gotta get my rice out so none of it shows up on the truck.

Honda=Beater. There are some fast hondas out there, but to start loooking at 11-12's on a street driven honda, theres some serious changes needed.

And as far as a prelude goes, If youve got a prelude keeping up with you anywhere between 0-80, you might need some hyperwhite bulbs and a 75shot of nitrous. I've hammered so many preludes in my sy that thought their car was the sheot. I hope yours has signifigant mods, or else its time to start tuning the ty.

I just bought my ty, so its in stock or less than stock form. Only thing I've done to it so far is replaced the broken ic pump. I have other stuff going in soon though.

My best run in my prelude was a 15.2@93mph. Nothing spectacular....but it ran that on a hot and humid and badly elevated and uphill track. I beat an Eclipse GSX w/ 18lbs of boost and many other mods...so yes it was a bad day to run. What sucks about the 4 cyl's is they have 0 low end power, but the damn thing redlines at 8k. If you care to see my mods...go here:

I myself dont have a SINGLE problem with this kind of IMPORT car... ONE that RUNS and is MADE to run....

On the other hand, the ones that have TYPE R all over them, are painted 15 shades of obscure paint or have stickers all over them (my favorite was the symbol for the NUCLEAR ENERGY  ) And of course the infamous 5" fart tip on that exhaust, yeah that 1.8L develops alot of backpressure.

I mean WTF is that? It screams "LOOK AT ME, I think I'm the MAN, even tho I have a 2" penis I need to get the chicks to look at me somehow" (even though they are PROLLY laughing at him)....

Whats really pathetic, is I used to race as many of these morons in my SPRING OVER JEEP on 33's... I'd try to line up next to them and drag race them off the line.. I kid you not, I'd take better than 85% of them... WITH NO TYPE R STICKERS on my jeep, sure it runs great, runs real well as a matter of fact.... What does it have ? A factory installed 4.0L I-6 that makes arounnd 200Hp.. If my jeep that has 3.08s in the diffs and 33s (not a combo for drag racing) can take a PIECE of shit like that.. Well he's better off taking the damn stickers off it and the fart tip.

I have alot of respect for the Honda guys that DO make them run, the Toyota guys, and the Nissan dudes too (friend has a 300zx thats far from stock and it FLIES)..But ya know why I have respect for most of them guys ? Not many of them spend their $$ on Type R this, Power By LAWN BOY stickers, or any of that NUCLEAR SHIT... I mean it gets to the point that these dudes think that shit is sooooooooooooooooo cool they have to out-do the last FUCKED OVER car their buddy had by fucking up their car even MORE !

Anyhow, Rant Mode OFF now.... if your car Runs the #'s great, if you think yer MR Fast and the Furious because ya pit on some stupid ass exhaust, took a park bench and glued it to yer trunk lid and threw Type R everywhere, well then I guess this post is dedicated to you.

in conclusion to my previous rant, ive read some of the responses, and i guess its just a so' cali thing. im not exactly sure what the popularity of rice is in other parts of the country, but in san diego 1 in every 3 cars is a loud annoying ricer, i guess over the years ive just developed an excessive hatred for them. when almost every single owner thinks he's some kind of bad ass with the fastest car on earth attitude, bumping his system at retarded volumes in the gas station while pumping gas, or in the drivethru, and through shopping centers just to get even more attention as if the 5ft airplane wing isnt enough.

before it was "cool" to waste a bunch of money to make your car look like an airplane. i really had no problem with these so called "imports" now people just go off the deep end with them. my only question is, why? maybe someone from a rice site will read this and post some answers. till then im still keeping this with my other favorite mystery of why our "latin-american" friends waste countless paychecks, to put rims, velvet interiors, and gold parts all over an '82 datsun thats not even worth $200.

The nuclear symbol is for Super Street magazine, ultimate purveyor of 16" high spoilers and 6" exhaust tips.

For the most part I can't stand imports. I will give props to the following vehicles:

MkIV Toyota Supra Turbo/ Twin Turbo
MkII Toyota MR-2 Turbo
Later gen. Mazda RX-7
Later gen. Mistubishi 3000GT VR-4
Last gen. Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo
and of course the overpriced and unattainable R34 Nissan Skyline Twin Turbo.

Other than that, I won't give it a second look (notice the trend here...FAST imports)

And another thing: Why do ACURA INTEGRAS WITH BODY KITS always rev on me at lights?

confusing gas pedal for brake (there are 3 downthere.. kinda confusing)

I had a kid to that to me, im turning left, hes turning right, he stops, revs to like 6k, and turns.

uh, ok.

ok ok ok... we get the point that a civic is a stupid choice to mod unless you turbo it and it is way too expensive to do that. go to any car show and ask around what is the cheapest and easiest car to get in to the 12's. and they will all say that a 1gen DSM is it. I will say from experience that you can find one for less than a $1000 that needs some work but most of it stuff that is going to get replaced anyway. You throw on all bolt on parts for around $2000 and you have a 12 second car easy.

working and modding these cars are just as easy as a phoon. From personal experience I can tell you from seeing a phoon blow up in 2 weeks while my POS was still running 19psi.

I have not had a chance to take mine since my embarrasing first run ever at a track so I cannot say how fast it is now. So for now I will leave it at that.

I think you mean "cheapest and easiest import". It's really hard to beat the cost of getting a GN into the 12s....

This one has really turned into a real love fest. Seems like there's a lot of pent-up import hostility. Kewl. Get it all out - you'll feel better.

personally, i have nothing against imports. they have their place, and there are a lot of nice examples.

Its this stick on, light up mentality that really doesnt sit right.

Same thing that they were doing YEARS ago with hood scoops and stripes on wanna be muscle cars. Customizing takes knowlege and taste, not everyone has either

92Typhoon, I couldn't agree with ya more. If the rice job is done tastefully, fine. If your gonna slap on any kind of "type r" badgeing, stickers, whatever, that shit better have a type r motor in it. If not, you're nothin but a fag in my book. There's soooo many riced out everything here in North Jersey, it's sickening.
Here's a funny example,
Today I'm sitting in my office here at work, and I hear "frrrrrrrrrr......... frrrrrrrrrr" coming from the highway in front of our place. So I get up and look out the window. What do I see? An accord all decked out in full "Uncle Ben's" rice gear. Traffic is dead stopped and this little punk has his window down and he's staring at my truck reving his little shit box up to what sounded like at least 6K rpm's. Stickers all over it, fart can, body kit, the whole nine. All I could do was point at him and laugh. If traffic didn't start to move, I would have went outside and pointed right at him and laughed in his face.
It's getting to the point that the "sports compact car" is just plain stupid.

It must be the salt air of the coasts. We get very few ricers in the midwest. The ones we do have get walked on by guys in clapped out '73 Firebirds and laughed at on college campuses. Clean air, big lawns, low cost of living... ahh. Seriously though, the kids only seem to be into this stuff for a few years around here. By the time they're 19 they've got three kids and child support payments to make. So they buy a clapped out '73 Firebird and walk on younger kids in imports. Move here, who else has a one hour commute and lives 72 miles from his office? I do.

I get that crap too.. Usually they are going the other way or Im stuck at a light at an intersection across from them.

One made the mistake of doing the "ricer intimmidation rev" while passing me as I was making a right hand turn. I don think he expected me to abort the turn and come after his ass. He gave up after I busted his ass BAD from a 50mph roll three times...

Justice served...
