Has anyone ever seen the inside of a sy gas tank? Like had 1 cut open? to see what the baffels & such are like.
I'd like to know so I could somehow fix the 1/2 tank starvation problem.

I believe Barry Tisdale opened his tank and modified the baffles for better fuel control.

No more starvation at WOT under 1/4 tank.

Not sure if its posted on the BB, but search the syty.org mail list archives for baffle and you should come across something.

IIRC he modified the pickup tube on the pump. Used RTV to seal it and the gas made it baloon like expanding foam. He mentioned to NOT do what he did. Think I remember about him having to use the fuel pump hole to get his hand in there and do the work. Don't think he actually cut the tank apart.

if you run an inline pump you can just weld a sump to it. Thats probably the easiest thing but will be a bit louder.

I'm doing this to a sy right now so I could take some pics of the baffles inside now that its out

If anyone in the Chicago land Area would like a tank from a Syclone i have one behind my shed that you could have. Just come pick it up it's free.

I am currently using a Race Safe Plastic Fuel Cell mounted in an Aluminum Cradle. From underneath all you will see is the aluminum cradle. This should look very nice. Cost - Not Sure ? The tank is going to be mounted between the frame rails were the spare tire was mounted. I hope to have pics this weekend.

Marty,

Pls post pictures or a location if you have a chance. I'd be interested to see it. Also what kind of pump are you using? How big lines? What's the capacity of the cell and how much does it weight?

TIA,

This is what it looks like without the cradle. You can see that the tank is a near perfect fit. I will have to get youthe specs on the Aeromotive in-line pump, most likly going to run a -8 fuel and a -6 return, Tank is 15 or 18 gallons, weight not that heavy but it does weigh slightly more then a stock unit however the weight is in a much better location.

Now what's the *safest* way to do this. Obviously if you're using an old tak there are going to be fumes inside of it, and drilling holes and welding could cause a big bang. I'm sure a professional shop can do it, but what if the average back yard mechanic wants to try?

Radiator shops sometimes fix gas tanks. They can submerge the tank in that huge VAT of GOOOO they use when they work on radiators. All you need to do is replace the fumes with some sorta of INERT material (water).. and make sure that you get it all out obviously before re-installation.

As todd mentioned water is a commonly used displacement material for fumes.

You can also use a hose from teh exhaust of a car, with constant flowing air in/out. Idea is to make sure fumes don't build up, and are being removed.

Of course you should remove all liquid fuel before hand, but if you need that warning, you shouldn't be working on anything.

i'm sure there are a hundred ways to do it, but i think filling the tank with argon after it has been flushed out is the most recommended.
