Re: Garnet Typhoon #1519 112k miles *STOCK*

I would have to disagree with a typhoon over 100k miles needing a new engine. It all depends on how it's been maintained... sure, a truck that had a huge turbo slapped on at 50k miles and has 50k hard miles could be a likely situation, but this truck runs great!

I agree, before I starting dickering with my typhoon (previously owned by my dad), the stock motor lasted 175,000 miles. That was with 2 teenage male drivers occasionally being allowed to drive (more like completely abuse) the truck. The trans was about 168,000 or so. If they are maintained, they can last. Just a note to the people who want to go fast, my dad put 268 or 9 thousand miles on his truck and then sold it to me, needing a lot of TLC. He put those miles on between 93 and really 98 or 99, sold it to me in 2000. The truck now has something like 273 or 274. It hasn't run in years. LEAVE IT STOCK. 5000 miles in 17 years for me, 268,000 miles for him in 5 or at most 6 years.

This truck does indeed run really well. Aaron spent a lot of time addressing little issues like interior trim and stock features like the radiator and IC pumps rather than go-fast goodies. The truck ran really well and wasn't abused.

Whoever gets this is getting a solid runner.

How hard is it going to be for you to fix the paint mate? Shame it left the UK!

After looking at all the pictures and reading the sellers description I still agree with Dave. I would rather have a damn near perfect body and a shitty engine that blows oil. Rust never sleeps. Unless you are a awesome body man there is $5k there to make it nice. I would rather redo the engine/trans ( mechanical stuff0 than body work. Color aside sorry to say I would be a tire kicker also after looking at it. I would move on to a different typhoon. Just saying that is me. Nice color, just not for me.

Body is solid. Been a west coast car and doesn't have any real rust. I couldn't imagine any rust that would need to be address or welded. I couldn't see it needing any extensive body work.

Have you had the cladding off? I see signs that it may possibly have more rust issues than you think. But maybe not. With these trucks sometimes it is hard to tell by pictures. It doesn't look to bad at all underneath. But one of your pictures would make a person want to really look to be sure about any type of rust issue.

It is a very rare color truck. One of my favorites. But a person has to really look into what they think the total investment will be to get one of these trucks to get it into the condition they want it to be.

Car is pretty much sold locally. Deposit has been left with me, and an approved loan. That's a front fender, so I don't see that as a really big deal. The rear is solid.

Buyer seems to be very excited and is planning to keep it all stock, and repainted. He understands the rarity and looks forward to tinkering and working on it. It's easy to judge a car online and pick apart the fact it needs paint in 30 different ways. I took pictures of everything and wasn't hiding anything. The car is solid.

Whoever owned it before me, repainted the cladding (extremely poorly) and didn't remove it for paint... AND MASKED OVER THE STOCK DECALS. I'm glad this guy looks forward to doing it right and restore it.

Also, I'm not sure why everyone decided to jump in and pick this thing apart without seeing it in person. I could understand messages from people who were legit interested...

The only reason I mentioned anything about rust is because you said there was none to speak of. I guess everyone has their own opinion of what is minor and what is not. In my opinion there is enough that I see in the pictures that I personally would be concerned. Others may not mind it as much.

I have done body work and painted cars for 40 years. Repairing rust will not be cheap. If it is done at a shop.

You did post good pictures for everyone to see. So no you were not trying to hide anything.

It is great you found a buyer. So things worked out fine for you.

Because people were trying to help you understand your value and why it wasn't selling fast. The points brought up were legitimate. Doesn't mean you can't get your asking price, just means you need the right buyer. Not all of us would spend 10k on a truck that needs a paint job.

I'm pretty sure this was a for sale thread. I never asked for my truck to be picked apart 1000 times.

a) Thread cleaning very likely coming your way.

b) As far as tips to avoid tire kickers and drop-aways...I don't think there's any way around it. Certainly "Firm" price filters some of them. But ultimately "car guys" will get excited about a particular car (this goes for daily driver shopping as well as specialty cars) and then for whatever reason, come to their senses or move on to the next adventure.

I happen to be in the market for a daily driver and have inquired about many cars. I'm sure dealerships are used to this. There is a bit of a rush when you first see a car of interest...but then reality hits and you move on for whatever reason...maybe a different car catches your eye. It's a curse. I think I've read every ad on AutoTrader in the past week within 25 mile radius.

Eventually one of those tire kickers will be motivated to make the buy...so you've gotta wade through the BS to make that happen.

Absolutely. Tire kickers see things to repair or replace like bad paint and then look for ways to dumb your price down or move on if the vibe you give is that your firm. I think the info you were given was good info, I certainly wouldn't have viewed it as picking it apart as I don't think anyone was trying to say you're crazy or your truck is worthless. I viewed the posts as people trying to help. :2cents:

Congrats on the sale, glad you found a buyer.

Officially Sold. Don't be surprised if I end up with another one in the far future though! I would love to find a clean roller to turbo Ls swap.
