Larger Front Disc Upgrade

Guys, I was readin on the web that you could possibly swap front disc brakes from a FWD GM vehicle that had larger discs. But then I realized that most GM FWD cars had a srut type suspension setup which wouldnt work. So I thought why wouldn't larger disc fit from a full size GM pickup?? Possible just swap the front spindle along with the bearing??? These are somethings that would have to be addressed first though....
1. Is there a GM truck that actually has larger front disc??
2. Does it have front ABS sensors in the bearing to tie into our system??
3. Is the spindle going to be roughly the same overall hieght as stock??
4. Will our stock CV shaft fit in the spline of the new bearing??

I know some guys are running duel piston calipers with slightly larger rotors from a 1998+ s-series, but doesnt seem worth it to me, besides maybe the extra holding force when Brake torquing?? And Im to cheap to spend the big bucks on the Baar upgrades. I installed the rear disc from the LS1 and what to find something the same for the front. Can anyone add some info to this?? I made bracket to install C5 calipers and ZR1 13" rotors on my typhoon. I also installed LS1 rears and they seem to work well with an adjustable proportioning valve and no ABS. I only drove it a little before I pulled the engine, but it worked fine. I plan on roadracing the truck so brakes are important to me. I'll take pictires if you're interested.

Scott, thats exactly what Im talkin about. Id like to see the pic. Thanks fern Sy#477

Unless you find the parts used, the c5 parts are going to be that far away in cost to what the baer GP costs. The parts new are around $500 plus you need to make a custom bracket (not that hard) The c4 13" brakes cost about the same and I had though about doing the same, but for me the hassle of making the parts fit wasn't worth the $100 savings.

BTW the C5 calipers don't clear all 17" rims. My freind with a ZR1 was telling me that they clear the factory A mold, but not all the reproduction a molds. They also don't fit some of the other production 17" c4 rims, such as his 90 wheels.

I bought my C5 calipers off E-Bay for about $150.00 pr. and I recently bought rotors at a buy it now for $110.00. I've bougth three pairs of calipers at about the same price, 2 new pair, 1 used pair. I had some friends at a machine shop make me the brackets. I'm sure it got billed with the other projects, but I can't put a cost on them. This is the same combination I've used on my '01 Firebird for the last two years on One Lap of America, with no problems. The C5 caliper give you many choices for race/street pads. The calipers will fit inside my 17" reproduction SS wheels on the 'bird or Ty. They also clear my 17" OZ Monte Carlo's. They wouldn't clear the Enkei 3piece wheels I had on the 'bird before the big brakes.

I guess you could do the same thing with the stock LS1 F-body rotors, as they are only 12" The holes in the braket might get too close.

I took pictures of mine tonight, but I can't seem to get them down to a resonable size to show on here. If you want I'll send them to you.

umm anyone heard the rumor about 98 up bravada/ blazer/gmc rotors, calipers, and using the rear disc set up because the abs plugs into the new ones?

do a search for posts by tloof. he's got a lot of information about upgrading to the 98+ style brakes. if you want to keep the stock wheels i doubt you'll be able to use the corvette setup, but you should be able to use the newer style s10 stuff.

if i can find the vette parts, i may go that route instead. i do have most of the parts for the 98+ upgrade that i would sell.

Thanks for all the info. One more question, if I decided to take on this task will these fit behind stock wheels?? Have you tried?? Fern Sy#477

judging from other sites i've read, some people have had problems using a-mold (knock off) zr1 rims. think the link i posted said that. i don't think they will fit 16", but you never know. i know keith (keith455) has the bear setup on his sy with stock front rims, not sure if he's got 12" or 13" rims.

i think i might like to try this!

The pictured set up will need at least 17" wheels. Not all 17's will clear. I have "knockoff-reproductions" that clear fine.

I wanted the biggest rotor that was close to working. The bolt pattern, offset, and center hub hole is about ideal. If you use the C5 rotors (12.5")
the offset puts the caliper too close to the face of the wheel. If you wanted to try smaller rotors I would look at LS1 F-Bodys('98+ camaro/Firebird)

This wasn't hard to do, and now my front rotors are bigger than the rears.

Not those, they are about 12.5" C5's I'm useing these:
Auct #2437108054 Sorry about the confusion.

I know a guy who makes brackets for LT1 F-bodies (12" rotors stock)
to use C5 rotors, and the offset moves the caliper out far enough he has to run wheel spacers for clearance. For this reason, I didn't consider C5's for the truck.

Scott, I was lookin at the pictures and noticed there was no ABS wire anymore. So I guess the ABS wouldnt work with the new setup?? I had the front end apart a couple of times but forget whether the reluctor ring for the ABS is part of the rotor or the bearing??
