Re: Lets talk HID

I found these BMW bixenon projector in my brother's garage, so I am going to see if to get them to work.
I drives in NYC and like everyone else here, we really don't care about blinding other drivers. I agree that projectors look much cleaner.

Re: Lets talk HID

The lens I bought was already blacked out, and I since have powder coated the rings, etc so it looks a lot better. I'll try and find some more shots I took from when I installed.

The retro kit is kinda iffy, as when sometimes the relay will stick on or off. The first one I had the relay would stick on when you turned the lights off, and now this one sometimes the right headlight won't turn on when cold, I have to turn it on and off a few times. I guess i'll have to build my own relay using high quality parts.

I have a 280z also with a kit a company sells, and it does look like its out of this world, I wish they would look more normal, but you have to take the high output light vs stock appearing in some cases. Here where I live, lots of wildlife on the road, dark streets, etc so its worth it!

Tech9 your kit looks pretty good! Got any shots of the lights from a bit of a distance? like 20' away?

Did you black out the projector lens housing and the inside of the conversion housing?

if i went this route it would have to be stealth... yeah the projector set up is awesome, but I'd have to go with the cheap shit HID kit if projectors can't be done without looking like I got HAL 9000 for headlights. I don't want to be trapped outside my Typhoon asking it to open the pod bay doors.

Photos are not good, but 1st is brights on, 2nd is normal. Much sharper if my phone cam didnt suck ;)

Re: Lets talk HID

That looks so great, I cant wait to get the retrofit source kit, im gonna go D2S though because I think it'l be easier to buy replacement bulbs for that. Have you had to replace the bulbs yet? Or have you not had them that long?

Re: Lets talk HID

I used these because they were actually shorter in overall length because of the bulb connector. I have a spare set of bulbs, but I have not had them go out yet. I heard phillips OEM bulbs are WAY better then the knockoffs.

Re: Lets talk HID

tech9 thanks for posting the pics, however i didn't describe what i was asking for properly haha...

i meant pics of the front of your truck during the day from about 20ft away without the lights on... just want to see if the projector is really noticeable with everything blacked out.

Re: Lets talk HID

There is a really simple easy way to keep the low beams on. For me I just jumped the low beam wire at the switch on the column. I soldered the low beam wire to basically bypass the high beam switch. The high beams still operate as normal, but the lows remain on always. No extra relays or caps, and no worry that the lights go out when you want high beams.

I was thinking an HID relay harness (I have a few) and a diode. Two triggers both high and low beam.
So either low or high will turn on low beam and the high beam switch will control the flapper in the projectors.

Re: Lets talk HID

So I drove my truck around last night with new setup and its almost too damn bright. After the install I was lighting the tops of trees. I have since aimed the headlamps down and I'm pretty sure its still not enough. I have the CIBIE headlamp housings (has a big E in the center, supposed to be Euro and cut down on glare???) and it still seems to have too much glare. I guess I'll just drive it around and see what happens.

I had the same problem as you, even with shields. I ripped the whole shit out and researched how to do it right. Its unfortunately the most expensive route.

See post 31.

Re: Lets talk HID

<----- Still enjoy every time I fire up my retro in the morning and see the sexy output! See post 38 and 40 here, for another option.

Re: Lets talk HID

Those reflector housings you used with the shields is very very similar to what I had installed. I'll admit though, your output is better than mine was with that type of setup. About as good as you can get with reflector type housings. Doesn't look too blinding either... looks like a decent option for those on a constrained budget. Did those shields come with those housings? Or were they a separate piece that was added in with the D2S?

Haven't had anyone flash me , I kind of like how bright they are. I don't really care about the cut off line, as long as I can see. Been driving every morning & evening.

Those aren't mine. It sounds like he has a shield for the bulb, as well as the standard one in the conversion housing. I'm running FX-R's with oem bulbs/ballasts.
