Looking for tips

I am going to my first drag race with the syclone Friday night. We are having a work grudge match. There is a mildly built 1993 RX-7 and a stock-ish Supra that I am competing against. It is a 1/8 mile track. My only mods are IC pump upgrade and air intake. I have searched the forum and have the boost launch down, and know about the initial-boost-chip-limit thing. Is there anything else to keep in mind? I know this is short notice but the trash talking has been flying around the office so today it was decided to put up or shut up. Loser buys drinks and will bitch of the office. Any tips would be appreciated.

I would atleast practice holding boost before you goto the track, maybe try a couple launches. Don't do a bunch of boosted launches in a row. Give some cool down time inbetween.

Sometimes owner find out, they are doing it wrong or there brakes don't hold and need to be fixed. At the track usually you can 't do anything...

1/8 mile you should be able to rock their world!
1. TCC lockup ( paperclip is quick and easy )
2. Hotwire I/C if not already done
3. Drop tire pressure, I run like F-30ish R-28ish, if the track isn't too far away. You wont want to drive a 100 miles on those tire pressures.
4. Ditch the spare and spare tools, take out pass. seat if you want to get really crazy ( they might call bs on that one )
5. Try to leave the line with a good 5-10psi depending on how your truck is setup.

Damn I love this site! 20 minutes and the tips are coming in!
IC is hot wired and rerouted. I will bring some ice with for in between run cool downs.
Spare is gone.
I will search the TCC lock up specs.
Please keep 'em coming!

Probably the best advice anyone could give you, your whole run will be based off that launch and if you cant launch it right it will hold you back.

Just go out somewhere safe and sit there and try and see how much boost you can make before the truck will pull through the brake setup you have now. That will give you a good idea what it will hold at the tree so you don't jump out too early and red light. You should practice that first just to see what you get for psi, don't even launch it, just see what it will hold, then when you know practice your launch. You may have to do the rev in neutral trick to build more brake pressure but I have yet to find a track that gives you enough time to do that at the tree.

Depending on how crazy you want to get, change to a 160* T-stat, put in some water wetter in the I/C and radiator, upgrade R-brakes, all could be done before the weekend if your motivated.

Re: Looking for tips

Also, is this at a track? If so, is this best timeslip, or heads-up? If it's timeslip, go when you're ready, don't be too anxious to leave just cause the other guy goes. If' it's headsup/on track, try and be first to lineup, and give yourself enough time to do the Todd A. launch technique

If it's headsup with a flagger/off track, tell the flagger to look at you and when you nod your head, he can drop (you don't wanna sit and build boost for 10 seconds and let your tranny cook)

See about adding about 5 gallons of 100 octane......or Xylene

Re: Looking for tips

I will pick up some xylene and marvel mystery oil tomorrow. We are all turbo cars, so we have agreed to best time. I have to admit- I have driven the other 2 cars and they are fast. I only hope to get a great launch and hold them off at the end. This is only an 1/8 mile track so I think I have a good chance- if it was 1/4mile....don't want to think about it.

Re: Looking for tips

Any of them running drag radials or slicks? If not I really doubt they will even hook up enough to be a concern, but your and mine definition of a mildly built rx-7 could be different.

hated cuz he drives fords
Re: Looking for tips

If the other cars are on radials and you launch and don't have tons of kr then they don't have a chance.. remember our trucks were made to run light to light wiht the best of them which useally are 1/8th in lenght.

I'd lower the tire pressure, ice down the ic and learn the limit of your brakes like everyone has stated already... Remove any thing that weighs worth a damn and don't hot lap.. allow time to cool down the ic.

"1/8 mile + boost launch in syclone = ownage."

I hope so.
I dont want office bitch added to my business card.
I know the competion is on the Supra and Rx-7 forums asking the same questions. I wonder what the responses they are getting are.

Hopefully the truth, "Give up now because that little black truck is going to hand your azz to you!" :rotf:

Well probably not, but if they were smart thats the advice they would give them

No he won't :squint:. Detonating one of these motors is just ASKING to put connecting rod(s) through the oil pan... If you hear knock at any point in your pass, get off the gas QUICK!

If you have an aftermarket boost gauge mounted on the pillar, try to stage in the right lane so that you can see both the tree and how much boost that you are holding simultaneously.

Don't go to the track with less than half a tank of gas. Less than half a tank and you run the risk of fuel sloshing away from the pickup making the motor cut out.

And stay out of the water box.
