Mitsu VR4

Wednesday night I believe there was a VR4 driver googling Typhoon.
I was on my way back from the Barnes & Noble on a long two lane'r through Renton's tech district. Very little traffic there except for a dark green VR4 which I passed pretty quickly. I got over because I needed to eventually turn left and I guess he took exception because at the light he got over next to me. Light goes green and he punches it. I'm assuming he ment to blow me away and get back over in front of me but I kind of expected it so as soon as the light turned I launched. I put a couple of lengths on him quick and he gave up. I thought those cars were quicker than that. Neither of us built any real boost for the light but I still expected him to be right there with me. Maybe he missed a gear or something but it seemed too easy a kill. He looked over at the truck at the next light but never looked at me though.

It's funny because some people 3 blocks from me have a black one for sale right now. It looks straight as 6 o'clock and their only asking $8,500 for it. I've been really thinking about picking it up but that would really put me back on my Ty mods.

Your probably right. The Twin Tubro Supra's are in that weight range too if I'm not mistaken.

More importantly the gear boxes in those are fragile. They're AWD which adds to the weight some and the stress to that box too.

Re: Mitsu VR4

ive always liked the look of the last year they made the 3000gt ( i think 98?) the one with the huge "built-in" spoiler. i hear they drive like a boat though.

Re: Mitsu VR4

Friend had a dodge stealth rt. (Same thing) The aws was cool but it was not that fast. High 13's I think.
I thought I was going to roll on one saturday but it was just a kid in a 3000. was not a vr4 so I did not bother.

Re: Mitsu VR4

I actually saw one of the super rare 3000GT HARDTOP convertables at a dealership like 7-8 yaers ago, can't remember much about it, I think it was red and the top kind of folded up into the back, again 7-8 years ago. I can't remember what they wanted for it but it was alot, we would drive by every now and then and it was there for like 2 years, just thought I'd share, carry on.....

They wanted $62,000 for those hardtop convertibles I believe. I actually raced one but it wasn't him I was meaning to race. We were both getting on the freeway and this fart can equipped 91-ish Accord was taunting us a couple stop lights before. He totally gets on it and we both nail it and destroy him. It was great. I was in the Z so pulling the VR4 was no problem from a roll but we both exchanged smiles and thumbs up after we jointly thrashed the Accord. Good times. :)

Re: Mitsu VR4

I had a '93 Stealth Twin Turbo. I ran 12.9@109 with a MBC, custom 3in exh, and a K&N filter. The car weighed roughly 3800lbs without me in it. As far as the GTech goes it was a mid 4 sec 0-60 car launching at 4500rpm. That put me around 400hp calculated.

I torn a clutch and then a tranny out of it and when I sold it w/80k+ miles it was ticking like a skeleton jacking off on a tin roof.

Thats because it was the wrong kind of VR4.

I use to look at getting one, until I looked under the hood and noticed it was a transverse motor

I think they are transverse because the majority of them were front drivers. I'm pretty sure they were built on the same chassis as the Eclipse/Talon which also came in a turbo charged transverse configuration with AWD.

Re: Mitsu VR4

Transverse because FF correct & AWD was taken from FF car. But Not the same chassis as Eclipse & Talon they were made here in US by DSM Diamond Star Motors. 3000GT & Stealths were made by Mitsubishi 3000GT was assembled in Japan & Stealths in US but partially. Both car are low 13's stock you have to dump the clutch though @5000-5500RPM. Both trasmissions are strong but 5spd output shafts are stronger then 6spd ones. Great cars but pain in the ass to work on. And in my experience they launch way better then both Syclones & Typhoons.

:rotf:

Your going to have to explain that to me, I'm not a rocket scientist by any means, but even my Dogs know that when you step on the gas all weight transfer goes to the rear... not that it's funny, but seeing 200+ pounds of rottweiler slide to the back of a jeep is slightly amuseing

also I seriously beg to differ what, if anything, is wrong with the way a SyTy launches? i'll give ya a few phone numbers to call of cars owners who's cars are a second or so faster than my truck, who've had there asses handed to them on silver platters from a street light.

have you ever driven one of these things? seriously... you DO KNOW that they are AWD right? being primarly RWD and the front wheels used as needed?

Re: Mitsu VR4

aftermarket is very expensive, weak transmissions and too much weight for my liking.. I had a friend that had one for a few years and loved it at first but once he got into the racing scene with it he quickly realized that he over paided for a car that couldn't hang without dumping tons of cash into it.. and i'd take a sy launch over a 3000gt launch personally any day

Re: Mitsu VR4

I kind of like the 3000GT VR-4s, being AWD, turbo, and manual. I had a friend who managed to hit ~150 in one, but the brakes faded so bad that they were useless. Nice kill BTW:tup:

I had mine well over 170 on the speedo. I think it could hit 161 out of the box.

Re: Mitsu VR4

One of my friends had a vr4(until he let one of his friends drive it one night and he totaled it  )Anyways he was begging me for a ride in the typhoon and I just did a 5psi launch, and he said that was way harder than any launch in his vr4.

Well I never had anything stay close to me on a launch. Can't wait to get the Sy running.

Re: Mitsu VR4

The VR4 market is just starting to come around as they had weak transfercases. Now there are a couple solutions cast/cnc'd housings out there that havn't been broken yet. A couple of their stripped race cars have gone in the 9's now and there is a 3.7L stroker kit out which should enable them to do 9's with full interior and 8's on the race cars. Handling wise their awd system wasn't really geared towards high performance so they typically understeer in most conditions. However there is a kit in development now to replace all 3 diffs to let it handle more like an EVO than a understeering whale. There are just too many decisions to make now on the vr4 so i'll just keep mine on the backburner and build the sy until they get all their new parts tested out.
