get a floor jack and a block of wood. lift the engine up from the oil pan. the frame pads suck ass, i heard its easier if you drop the front diff.

Re: my small project

Yeah bud, like Branden said your gonna have to atleast drop the front diff a little to get to nuts on the bottom of the frame pads. I think I remember there being 4 bolts that hold the front diff in once you have the axles out. Those nuts are under the tab that comes off the frame, man if I were you I would just pull the whole thing out, you are so close, what 6 bell housing bolts, 2 motor mount bolts, the fan, and the A/C braket. Then you don't have to kill yourself to try and get those mounts in and it will be a little easier to get the heads on, YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE 6 BELL HOUSING BOLTS OUT ANYWAY TO CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION, so what that leaves almost nothing left, just do it!

Re: my small project

Still thinking about pulling the engine. the ac is just laying there. Heck I still have a long time before everything comes in. where should I pull the engine from now without the heads on?? Still have to find a engine lift and buy a stand. once its out I will have to spend more money on it. So close to just rebuild it at that point.

Trans is drained and shafts are comming off tomorow. There was metal on the drain plug.

Re: my small project

If it was me and I was in your situation ( not saying this is the best way ) but I would get 2 bolts that are the same threads as where the heads bolt on and run a chain from one bolt to the other. You don't HAVE to rebuild it just because it's out, look at me. How many miles are on the motor?

Re: my small project

motor has 95k. Thats why I am thinking I was going to rebuild it in a few years. Compression was good. Maybe just do a cam?? Money is verry tight right now. But after tax time I might have a few grand adv.

Re: my small project

compression was good before I ripped the motor apart and the pistons look ok. If I pull the engine I might just dress it up a bit, put on a nice water pump, and maybe a cam.

people always talk about the 4 bolt mains. Are they worth it?? what about a better 2 bolt main? Oil pump? Any small things I should do while its out? Thanks

Re: my small project

I just replaced my main cap bolts with arp hardware , around 20 bucks . A switch to 4-bolt will run you $600-750 with parts and machining . Hell thats almost the price of a set of pistons and rods . Use money wisely .

Re: my small project

I was thinking the same thing. So I should just replace the hardware? the caps themselfs are ok? I see that rpm sells 2 and 4 bolt caps. Just was not sure if that was a failure point on our trucks that 100$ could make a difference with new caps and bolts. Thanks

Re: my small project

Orded a motor stand and I will rent a lift. Now that I have my engine apart where should I lift it from. Should the head bolt locations be stroung enough to lift the motor? Thanks.

Re: my small project

I have a stand, hoist, my new solid mounts and 4l80 conversion kit today. I will be pulling the motor tomorow. Any hints from someone who has been there. Thanks.

Re: my small project

my garage is more dirty then the truck. I thought it looked clean for a 95k truck. Lots of oil from the power steering pump. It used to leak on the crossover and smoke. TC looks a but beat up for only having 4k miles on it. I think I was had when I bought my truck. Any way to tell what type of TC it is. I plan on selling it but I want to make sure what It is first. I was told its a 9/11 2300 stall. I dont know shit about them except how they work.

Re: my small project

got a early x-mas present. I ripped my engine apart as far as I am going to do. surprised to see the timming chain was still tight. only a little play. I have a few q's.
1) how long does the oil pump last? with 95k miles should I replace it?
2) I line up the "O's" on the 2 gears? the crank has a triangle and a rectangle too. I guess thats for advance timming?
3) the gears are smaller. I guess the ratio is the same?

For peace of mind it my be a good thing to replace. I'm not sure, but I bet that the pickup is not secured to the pump. Pump is cheap ~$30, you can buy the pickup clamp that Jegs has or have the pickup tack welded to the pump.
Get the Melling M55A pump.
