New member, from Ma. doing a typhoon swap

First post! Hi I'm Dan i'm from middleboro, ma and im the proud owner of a crumpled beer can of a black on black typhoon! First off im gunna go ahead and say this is my first time ever using a forum of any kind, so please bear with me. Ok so here are the details! I haven't gotten my truck number yet, i actually don't even know the year yet haha. (no title yet) its a black on black typhoon, and it is hit wicked hard on the passenger side. From my amazing powers of deduction, i figure it was wrecked in early 1998, ( jan 97 budwiser empties inside of it haha). I'm pretty sure the truck is from around here in new england some where. it looks like it hit a pole doing at least a hundred..... sideways. So here is the plan i have this smashed up typhoon, but the motor is untouched with 36k on it, i have an 86 monte carlo ss with t tops, a very nice body, and no motor or tranny. I also have a stupidly rare factory 5 speed setup i found in a 87 cutlass sitting 30 feet from this typhoon in the junk yard. Sooo 4.3 turbo/intercooled 5 speed monte carlo ss... i'm thinking the Grand nationals bad ass older brother. I have always wanted a typhoon or syclone, but could never afford one, if i cant have the real thing at least i can save this ones heart and keep part of this rare truck alive.

About me, I LOVE CARS!! i have a sick obsession with pretty much anything with a motor, i love classics, but can respect anything that is cool, big trucks, small trucks new cars, old cars, american muscle, or supped up ricer. i work at a junk yard, so that helps enable my addiction. I am 23 an have had around 30 cars. This typhoon is only my second turbo car, my first was a 95 eagle talon turbo awd.

My Cars;
69 cutlass s post car, this is my baby, it was a olds 350 with a th400 when i got it, Its now sporting a chevy 350 and a muncie m21 close ratio, and i just put in a sweet heated power, black leather interior with center console out of an acura tl.

55 oldsmobile 88 two door, mild custom, mostly there, currently not running, plans included a compleat 90's buick roadmaster drive train- lt1 od auto 12 bolt posi disk breaks and all that jazz out of the doner

69 chevy c/10 shot bed 2wd. 250 six 3speed on the floor, sweet little truck, gunna be registerd and all set to go in about a month

86 monte carlo ss w/ t tops, adjustable rear upper control arms, mosier axles, i built a nice 350 for it last fall, but it spun a bearing after a week. doh! so now its gunna get the typhoon motor! sweet

oh and i have pics of the typhoon but don't know how to post them! if you wanna check it out ill put up a link to my facebook!

Truckless. For now.
Re: New member, from Ma. doing a typhoon swap

Good luck with your project. My only suggestion, stick with an Auto and ditch the 5spd.

5spd trans and a SyTy turbo 4.3 = SLOW.

Can't wait to see the build progress.

Re: New member, from Ma. doing a typhoon swap

i see, why are they slow with a five speed, i know you wouldnt be able to boost launch, do you loose all the boost and have to build it back up when you shift? I'll do a search on it i guess. i think the tranny is still good in the truck, i know the transfer case is broken in half, can you change the tailshaft on the 4L60e (thats whats in them right?) easily to make it 2wd?

What year Typhoon and what's the last four numbers of the VIN?

Open up a photobucket account.
Upload photos from your files to photobucket.
Copy image code and past into a SyTy post
Done.

thanks baythan, ok ill try this out, and im gunna go write down the vin and check the emissions tag to see what year it is, i bought it this past saterday from middleboro auto savage for parts, the guy that he got it from has passed away so he didnt have the title which was a shame, but this ty is in no way rebuildable as you will see if the pics work, im gunna post a couple of the monte too! acctually im going to part whats left of it out once i take what i need, but ill get to that when the time comes. Ok, here we go.

Looks like what's left of a '92. Bold project...good luck.

Sell that one piece of rear corner cladding to help fund your project. :)

Re: New member, from Ma. doing a typhoon swap

building boost is VERY hard with a 5 speed, so the truck won't be fast..

it is a 700r4 tranny.

Haha, yeah I actually got a really good deal on the truck, so I'm planning on passing that on deal on when I part it out, there isn't too much left, but id rather lose some scrap weight and help some one out, these trucks are so rare you have to save everything you can. I have a couple other odd ball cars, so I know how hard it can be to find stupid little parts.

That 5 speed isnt going to hold the torque of Ty engine. You will probably have problems with the rear end as well.

Well, there might not be that much here that's salvagable and syty specific. Hard to tell from the photos, but if those things are still on around the doorhandles, you could restore them with some "back to black" and sell them. They were specific to 92's.

Do you even know what 5 speed he is refering too? Cause some can be built very cheap. Like the t5 if you cna do the labor yourself can be built to handle 600trq for under 1k.

I have friends with 600whp cars with built 5 speeds in them. You can build most tranmissions to easily handle the power.

Are those 600 whp cars with 5 spds AWD?

Uh...this one perhaps, from the original post:

"rare factory 5 speed setup i found in a 87 cutlass sitting 30 feet from this typhoon"

Yeah that is definitely my truck, I'm actually on my way out back to look at it now, i think one door thing is missing, the gauges are there and the steering wheel suspension is good except for one co role arm, ill update at 5 or so when I'm off if work

Re: New member, from Ma. doing a typhoon swap

Dunno - I think MCSS with a turbo 4.3 and a 5-speed would be a lotta fun.

Keep us updated.
