Black,
Even if done correctly, and planned ahead, rebuilding a tranny on a syclone can be a nightmare, i took my trany to a shop that everyone in town recommended, he had built many 10 second and udner cars that run at the track and had a great reputation, so i thought i had nothing to fear, well, i was wrong, he assumed the sy/ty 700r4, and commense my story: the forst time he rebuilt it and gave it back to me, it was shifting like crap, i couldnt believe how mushy it was, he kenw i used the truck for racing and said he was going to make the shifts chirp all 4 tires, well, needless to say the next day the tranny failed because of low fluid pressure, he payed for the tow back to his shop and tried to rebuild it agian, this time he blocked the actuators off, used some huge valves and put it back together, we,, it still shifted like complete ass, he said he wanted to keep it overnight so it wouldnt burn up agian, well, the next day he ulled it out AGIAN and rebuilt it infrfont of me, he said he was so pissed off at my syclone that he wasnt gonna F$ck around with it this time, he said it was gonan chirp all 4 tires and break my neck this time or hed give me a full refund and build it for free, well he went back in and did all sorts of crazy sh&t, called hi buddy from california that had some experience with sy/tys and found out he was using a "standard" 700r4 valve body that was blocking a pressure hole thats supposidlky only standard on a sy/ty, and it was cuasing it to shift like crap, wel after he put the right vavle body in it was shifting like a god damn demon of a syclone, i loved it, the moral of this long and drawn out and most liely mis-spelled story is, Make sure whever rebuilds it knows what a syclone is, and knows the differences between a sy/ty and a regular 700r4 tranny, because there is alot of stuff thats differnet, GET AHOLD of the tranny guru brian hartman he will steer you in the right direction, he is the god of all things tranny on a syclone/phoon, he even offered to talk to the guy that was building my tranny and try to find out what was wrong but it was alrdy fixed by then, if you are going to get a torque converter get the hartman 9/11, if you want a fail safe tranny that will 100% shift like it should, get a hartman tranny, but whatever you do, dont stick yourself with a rag tag tranny shop thats thinks a syclone tranny is like every other 700r4 on the planet, because its not, another option is the GM replacement its around 1000 dollars i believe, and whatever you do, dont let the same mechanic that ruined your tranny by taking the tv cable out try to fix it, infact, stay as far away frrom that dude as you can, and get ahold of hartman, peace

What exactly broke? For what it's worth, Peter Humblias has run a high ten on the stock transmission (with a torque converter). Others haven't been so lucky. You could just have it rebuilt to stock specs and probably be ok into high 11s. TCI makes a kit that has the same clutches as stock, with a 9 disk 3-4 pack, it's pretty cheap. Or if you want to go balls out, give Brian Hartman a call and see what he has to say.

Oh, and you want the TCS torque converter you can get it from Brian Hartman or from Ghettosled.

Second that!Having a $3500 trans eat it after 350 miles is something I wouldn't wish on anyone else.Do it once, Do it right.

He broke third gear....burned it up. What are the specs of this torque converter. It's a 9/11 with a 2800 stall? This is the choice for all mods even bigger turbo's?

I am having my tranny redone now, truck has about 30,000miles on it. They converter was slipping so I am having one made by Art Karr (I spell that right) and I found the famous blck dust in the oil which is most likey they 3-4 clutches in the 700. Im having it built to take major punishment and its running in excess of $2500.00 now Id rather by big dollar motor stuff but if the truck isnt getting it to the ground then its not worth panther piss.

black stuff in the pan is Normal....to an extent...thats the residue from all the clutches over time they will deposit to the pan. the 3-4 clutches are the weakest point in the system...you need to add clutches to them and do several other things to fix this problem...it's not hard if you know what your doing.

When I found that in one my my tranny's, it was the band that was smoked.

This was a build from BowTie Overdrives.
Pump bushings was galled badly, also.

Hey pittman - make sure it is really Art Carr. I think there is 3 companies using his name. They all have the rights to his name. The kicker is one is great but the other two are crap. Have a friend with a 9 sec 66 Chevelle, long story short, he thought he was getting an Art Carr converter. Well after three returns and many phone calls he found out he the company is only using Carr's name because they have rights to it.

Just saying, if you can, talk to Carr yourself. From what I know he has no problem answering calls.
