One last shot... Breaking up!

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

I tried to unplug the tach lead off the coil as daveP suggested but the truck would not start. I didn't go any further than that because it's just been too damn cold outside! I have a new engine harness to put in but I haven't been able to do it yet...

As of now it's been in the 20s at night and the truck's battery is dead from sitting. I can't bring myself to leave my El Camino outside and put the POS ty inside to work on it

I've been borrowing my GF's 96 Grand Prix GT for the last 6 months and I hit a deer with it a few weeks ago. Now she's up my ass to fix her car so it might be spring before I even look at my truck  Apparently its more impossible to find a bumper cover for a 96 GP coupe than it is for a SyTY!!!!

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

well I spent my entire weekend replacing the engine/ecm harness, charging battery etc. Fired the truck and it's still popping and breaking up. I ran it with out the intercooler piping to make sure it's popping out the exhaust and it is indeed doing so.

I tried to figure out how to eliminate the tach signal but I couldn't make anything work. I give up guys... I've gone to far and I don't I will ever find the answer! I've changed everything except for the short block!!!

My next move is to plug the EGR ports on the upper intake. Anyone know what size drill/pipe tap is needed to plug the underside? 3/8" NPT?

Matt, is there any way you could condense everything you've tried, and all the things that look suspect (rotor/cap wear) into a new thread? I think if we had a summary of what you tried, and what did or didn't make a difference we could get somewhere..... I'd REALLY like to see you get this solved. :D

I was thinking about doing just that... I wish I could go through and EDIT this thread to condense it. I did find the rotor wasn't seated all the way down at one point and that was the cause of the double tracks marks. I've got a lot of reading to do (46 pages) to remember everything i tried! lol

I am going to attempt to consolidate this thread the best I can with out losing any valuable information. I may need the help of you guys to fill in some gaps. I appreciate everyone of you for following along and offering some great suggestions. If nothing else I have learned a lot! I'm going to try and work on this tomorrow evening and put together all the best info I can. I have done a lot and it's spread out over 46 pages so it's a lot to follow for anyone who wants to jump on board.... be on the look out for "One Last Shot pt4"

here is one last thing. Do you think that you may be floating the valves or the lash is set entirely too tight. If the lash is a little on the tight side you may have some issue @ different rpms based on harmonics in the valve train.

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

On page 42, I asked about a 3/8" hole in the dist. cap. So I searched 3/8 and on page 5 there was a post by Josh Young about caps & rotors. Don W posted that msd wants you to drill some 3/8" holes in the cap to eliminate weird shit from going on with the electrical fields. Just curious if you had tried that yet?...Jim

No I never tried that... I don't really see what that would accomplish and if it's necessary why MSD wouldn't do it from their factory. Anyone care to explain before I start drilling holes? Lol

Pat I checked the valves and I even leaked down tested the motor. I had 3 cylinders leaking down a little more than I'd like but nothing major. I could hear it coming up the dipstick tube so it wasn't leaking passed the valves. I had this problem a few years ago with a completely different set of heads as well... I'm missing something!

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

I don't know either, just remember reading here a couple of years ago. It's something that just stuck in my mind because it sounded so weird. And to be honest, I didn't do it to either of my Tys. I have to tell you that I'm learning a lot, but please get this fixed or we're going to get charged for the extra bandwith...Jim
