Price for 4L80E conversion?

It's just a six

Super Member
Just was wondering how much it costs to covert to a 4L80E trans.
Parts break down would be nice!
Trans core + rebuild.
Driveshafts.
Adapters.
Computer to controll it.
And what ever else that is needed.
Thanks

new nats class: Stock Turbo and 4L80E.

just one thing to point out...you can get new shafts or just have your existing ones lengthened/shortened.

Total cost will vary greatly depending on how much you do yourself and how far you want to go with tranny.

Jeremy has the bare bones 80e rebuild.

Convertor's are spendy 800-1100ish depending on manufacture, etc.

Overall your looking at 3k on low end, do 90% yourself to 7k buying everything off the shelf.

You can find more details on some other 4l80e threads on here.

from JS.........

Total cost really depends how much you want to do vs have done.

For example you can find 80e cores for $400, $600 parts and your done if you build yourself.

Or my tranny guy charges 2200 for tranny and core, built with warranty, just call him up and done.

convertor is $930ish for a good one. You COULD buy a cheap convertor to run, and upgrade later.

Controller I would suggest TCI which is $650 from jegs, etc. Again if you like wiring, and understand chips then you CAN do a gm ecm for less than $100. Takes 10hrs plus labor to get working though.

Kit is around ~1000 for stage 1.

Then add driveshaft length changing of $200.

So basically your looking at 5k +/-. So if you compare to 700 cost it initially sucks.

Long term if you plan to keep your truck, should you break something you looking at $500 fix max. That is if you COULD break something. I doubt you can, we have been trying without success.

As long as this isn't gonna be used as ammo to fuel a fight, email me if you are serious. I think you'll be surprised. Very surprised. My builds include the syty shaft output shaft machining and the cryo for it. If you buy everything from me to do the conversion, I pass along all savings. I make money on the trans labor, not the parts. Being so, I cannot break down the pricing as the suppliers do NOT want vender prices being thrown all over the internet. It's just NOT a good way to stay in good graces with suppliers. The only thing I CANNOT get a discount on is the TCI controller. Just get that from Summit or Jegs. They are within a $1 of each other. Don't buy the connectors they sell separately....$50 a piece. Silly. You only need to splice 5 wires. I redo the harness for it specifically for the syty but getting a discount is not gonna happen because I'm too small. $50K in purchases a year or they no givey discount....If every syty in existance went 4L80E I couldn't touch $50K. I also have a startup program for the TCI setup.
What I'll do is give you a price based on the build Jeremy has in his. This way you can go head to head. Only thing different will be the converter because I've found a really good supplier for the 4L80E. I just need to know what stall you want.
I'm building a street strip version right now. Just like Jeremy's with one extra billet piece. It only adds $80 to the build and I feel more comfortable with it. If you want it, let me know in the email.

I was thinking about this. Some readers may see this and think that the stock turbo applications this is installed in aren't making much power. Robert from Sweden has a 4L80E right? He has put some serious power thru his trans. Also remember that a stock turbo truck can make 500 lb/ft no problem.

I'm planning on making some decent turbo V8 power, but I don't even think I'll be stressing a 4L80E. Gonna be interesting to see who breaks what in this trans first. Parish was over 1000hp for a long time, but I'm pretty sure he's 2wd.

Great trans. You can't afford NOT to get it in the long run. Unless you like rebuilding a WHOLE 700 each time you turn up the boost to try to run a new personal best. I don't like to know that it isn't a matter of "IF it breaks" but rather "WHEN it breaks" when you run a 700.

Re: Price for 4L80E conversion?

I talked with the builder of Parish's setup.....the converter killed the first trans....Yank I think. Last trans the input shaft broke. There's a billet fix for that too but remember his truck weighs about 2500 pounds more than a syty. Comparing his to ours is OK but remember the weight difference. I think most guys will be safe with a cryo'd stock input shaft and main shaft. If you want though I can get billet input and main shafts.

What's the PN on the TCI controller? I could possibly do better than S/J on the price for that piece.

Here, Michael.
Here's what the kit looks like. It has the harness and everything.
tci-377000.jpg

TCI-377000 is the part number at Summit and 377000 is TCI's part number.

Parish's truck is 4wd.
Here's a link. It also has some info if you have a 4l60e and just want the same ecm to control the 4l80e. It also requires a reflash.

Price? Well that is hard to answer. If you value your dignity, dont do like I did and opt for the Jeff Scott "sexual favors" payment plan...

Re: Price for 4L80E conversion?

I am about to start my 4L80E conversion, so I've been putting together the numbers.

$1200 for the JS conversion kit

$6470 for the transmission itself done the way I want it (can be had MUCH cheaper for a stock/stockish unit)

$935 for a 10.5 triple disc lockup converter from precision

$660 for the shift controller

$??? for a carbon fiber drive shaft (Have to remember to call John Waller)

$375 for a Gilbert propshaft

I *THINK* that should be everything. So $9640 plus whatever the driveshaft costs, and that's without shipping on many of the parts, including the tranny.

There are plenty of places to shave some $$$ off my post, but as far as I can figure, this is the best of the best for a 4L80E swap. Just wanted to make sure you were prepared ;)

Re: Price for 4L80E conversion?

I will comment on the pricing and options available.

$1200 for the JS conversion kit

No realistic way to lower this price.

$935 for a 10.5 triple disc lockup converter from precision

Performance TC cost ~$1000 for 4L80E, another price that realistically is set in stone.

$6470 for the transmission itself done the way I want it (can be had MUCH cheaper for a stock/stockish unit)

This can be done cheaper, cores are $450-800 and from what I have read the parts alone for a basic rebuild is $600-800 for a DIY, so its atleast $1000 for the transmission and for most poeple its closer to $2000. (Transmission rebuilder fell free to chime in on this one)

$660 for the shift controller

Most aftermarket controller will cost atleast this. Their is a DIY option using GM ECM, but it isn't that simple to wire it up, I would guess that is going to tkae some time plus $100-150 in parts for most.

$??? for a carbon fiber drive shaft (Have to remember to call John Waller)

$600 + 150 is what waller lists for a price, the stock driveshaft can be shortened for cheaper.

$375 for a Gilbert propshaft

Most of us should already have an aftermarket propshaft, so the price difference would be what you sell you old one for plus the cost of a longer propshaft, I am not sure if you alread have a gilbert wether or not it can be modifed and lengthened.

IMO For most people this is going to be a $5000-6000 project, and it would be hard to get the costs under $3500 unless you are the ultiamte bargain shopper and an avid DIY.

That's got more bells and whistle than a 6l80. Rossler or Hartman units with a transbrake maybe?

Full cryo and billet components don't cost that much. Where in the world did you pay that much for a 4L80E?

Bingo. Rossler unit with all the good stuff, plus transbrake and $1600 custom gear set. :)

Re: Price for 4L80E conversion?

2.76 or so first gear.? Make sure you run the aftermarket controller. I don't know if they ever got the late model ls1 ecm's to "see" the new 1st gear. Don't know about the old obd1 stuff .

I hope they have though.

Re: Price for 4L80E conversion?

Yeah. You paid big bucks for the Kilgore gearset.
I'm sure it does well. The sun gear just doesn't look as beefy as the stock unit. Did Rossler do the "lightweight" configuration? I know it works in the 400. Just never tried it in a 4L80E. You gotta run a TCI or other aftermarket controller with the different gearset. You'll get a gear ratio error if you don't. I'm sure Rossler already worked that one out
Kilgore's the MAN.
