R. F. Axle housing problems

After cruising along at highway speeds for a couple minutes, I can hear a rotational noise from the right front corner of the truck. It sounds BAD. After jacking it up, I could see where the right front axle had worked its way out of the housing and was hitting the frame. The noise was the six bolts hitting a tab on the frame rail.

After tearing the differential housing out and not seeing anything wrong, I replaced the front carrier bearings and a couple seals. I was going to replace the wire snap clip that holds the axle into the side gear in the diff, but replaced the whole axle shaft with a new one.

I drove the truck to work, and it's doing the same thing again. I ordered the axle tube in case it's bent, and I am in the process of replacing it.

Has any one seen this before??

Any ideas as to what else to look for??

Thanks in advance,
Scott

My truck done the same thing!! Do you have reman CV shafts?

Re: R. F. Axle housing problems

I blamed mine on a bad axel clip after replacing it the axel worked its way out again
after a few days of driving. I noticed my inner CV boot was collapsed like it hade
a vacuum on it. I removed the CV axel and noticed the boot relaxed! On closer inspection
the inner CV joint has a cover/cap inside the bolt cercal this cap had a small hole in the center.
As the CV axel is working in & out from wheel travel a vacuum is developed in the boot.
This vacuum pulls on the axel until the snap ring gives up and out comes the axel!
The way I fixed mine was clean the cup with carb cleaner and with the axel in a relaxed
position place a peace of foil tap over the hole in the cup problem solved!!! I pulled my
f*ckin hair out for weeks before I found it that was about 10 months ago and counting!
The foil tap can be had at any hardware store.

Re: R. F. Axle housing problems

I ran into the same deal on my Ty. I traded mine out. The inner joint expands and contracts. They had clamped the boots too tight. I took it of and paid closer attention. My stock shaft had a hole on the flat part that was covered with tape or something. This one just had a flat plate. I took it apart, jacked up the suspension and lowered it until I found the longest travel and reclamped it at the point I marked it. No problems since. I guess when they build them on the bench, they don't have to know how the part they are working on actually functions.

yes the inner boot should be able to breath, it has to have a hole in the backside of the flange so that it can expand and contract.

Mine was breathing gust fine but only one way. I thought the same thing! My pass side had a paper sticker over the hole the drive side had no hole at all!
I looked at several different ones at the parts store some had holes some didn’t. The foil tape fixed mine that’s all that matters.

Re: R. F. Axle housing problems

Mine still has the origional C.V.axles in it. I was going to replace them but I've seen Reman axles that were no good out of the box. Instead, I decided to swap the side to side, figuring if there is any wear in the joints, now I'm pulling on the good side.

I'm headed out to the garage now, so I'll check the vent holes.

I also see that there is an "extra" bearing in my differential. This is where the right axleshaft plugs into the carrier. I assume this is because the diff. is from a 4x4 s10.
The axleshaft doesn't appear to ride on this bearing, as the O.D. is smaller at this point of the shaft.

Thanks for the quick answers.

Re: R. F. Axle housing problems

As a point of refrence, the new axleshaft from GM doesn't have two holes drilled in the flange like the old one did. This means if the inner CV joint needs to be vented through the flange side, there's nowhere for it to breathe.

The CV axle I have on the right is origionally from the drivers side, and it has no vent hole in the flange side. I can see the large cap pressed in the back of the joint, but it doesn't appear to have a hole in it.

Thanks Again,
Scott
