Re: Rear suspension?

Your goal is to run low 11's. That's fast, but not that fast......

I'm not trying to piss in your Corn Flakes, but you can get where you want to go with zero suspension work.

Re: Rear suspension?

If its the handling you hate, then I guess I'd just say....its a truck. Front coilovers and a rear sway bar apparently help greatly (haven't done them yet, just what others have said), but its still a truck. If you are trying to get away from the "squat" these trucks have on a launch, a lot of that is because of the front suspension, not the rear.

I thought someone had posted vids or pics of their truck on a launch pre and post coilovers, and the difference was huge.

I'm with Ken...I just don't see the benefit of spending the time and cash to put lipstick on a pig, unless you're looking to build a full nutz racer.

Re: Rear suspension?

Just remember this thought....

A poorly configured (geometry wise) 4 link or 3 link or ladder bar setup will ride and drive worse than a leaf spring setup. The factory GM leaf spring setup is simple, reasonably well designed, and does the job asked of it pretty well. (that goes for a lot of other things too....)

If you go building a 4 link setup, you'll have alot of things to consider, like anti-squat, instant center, roll center, center of gravity, and the like. You'll need to figure out where to put the instant center, what link lengths, pickup points and angles work best for your truck and put the instant center where you wanted it, and so-on....Not to mention figuring out how to avoid significant roll oversteer or understeer, what type of centering device you want to use (watts link, panhard bar, angled 4 link, etc.) and the multitude of other choices involved.

And if you're going to do all that, you probably shouldn't use the factory 7.5" rear. You should consider a 8.5" 10-bolt, or a 12-bolt, or a 9" Ford, or a Dana 60 (which is a beast, but also nearly bulletproof in an on-road truck).

I think Air Ride Technologies has a bolt in air bag system for the rear. You might check them out and see....

Re: Rear suspension?

I agree with JustDreamin and Typhoonmaster. The rear suspension pretty much sucks, and it is even more apparent after upgrading to coilovers in front. The rear can be made to hook up fine for straight line launching. Plenty of 60' times and ET's on this site to prove it. But for handling and ride quality - at the ride height I desire - it sucks. I'm waiting to see what Jeff comes up with. Hopefully it will be carefully thought-out. In the meantime, I'm experimenting with variations on the basic setup. Right now I have re-arched leafs, and 2" lowering blocks, and the ELC with minor modifications. With 50psi in the shocks, I have 27.25" height in the back and a the best ride/handling I've achieved so far at that ride height.

Re: Rear suspension?

I'm all for rear coil-overs. I know leafs suck. IRS would be optimal, but might be impractical and start to take away from the fact that our trucks are still trucks. Having watched my Dad race cars (not drag race) all my life and having been taught how important brakes and especially suspension affects a car (or trucks) performance; I have a great appreciation for much more than a cars motor and drivetrain. I love corners, but I know our trucks are not racecars, they're trucks; so getting them setup as closely to racecars as possible sounds like a great idea. I've seen some of the air ride stuff out there; there are just so many options. I'd love to see a 3 or 4 link rear coilover setup (designed well or course) on our trucks.

Re: Rear suspension?

Yes, definitely on the right track, except for the part where I have to cut off my ATR exhaust.... but, the exhaust is sorta in the way no matter what you do.

Re: Rear suspension?

Doe anybody know how well the rear coil over that turbo time is selling will work with the flex-a-forms and caltracs??

I have the springs and traction bars i want to install soon, but am not sure what to do for shocks?
