running very LEAN??

This is kind of long so bear with me,
About two weeks ago, I was running errands around town and was totally impressed with how my sy was running. It seemed like it was running much stronger than it has since i've owned it. Well, in the meantime of me flogging the shit out of it, I wen't to my local Motomart and put about half a tank of 92. I drove another 10-12 miles ( I kind of babied it) out to my dad's house and it started running terrible. missing, cutting out, would't hardly pull it's self. I assumed that I got some trash or water in my gasoline. So I poured a can of HEET into it thinking it would help and a few gallons of Methanol. It helped slightly, but no major improvement. At this point I siphoned all the gas out when I got home and put in 93 ***from somewhere else*** and it ran/idled smoother. At this point I was noticing that the stock boost gauge would not hardly move from inbetween boost and vacuum.
I then changed my fuel filter (noticed the previous owner had it on backwards) ......and that helped again but not a major gain. So, I run the trouble codes and find that code 34 (if i remember correctly) anyway the code for M.A.P. sensor has been set. I then remove the map sensor and test it with the volt meter and a vacuum gauge and it tested bad. So today I purchased a new M.A.P. and just put it on and no gain. The truck will run shitty then every third or fourth time i get into the throttle will pull pretty good. and then I will notice the air/fuel ratio gauge going VERY lean so I then back out of it.
I just can't figure this out. I don't have access to a datamaster or I would try that. Is there any thing else I should look for??

Thanks for all your help guys, and sorry for the long post.

If you haven't done your vacuum lines you need to replace them, make sure you tie wrap them on or boost will blow them off. You can get silicone vacuum line at Auto Zone in red, blue, yellow.

yea, i've done silicone lines allready,....the only things i can think of are the fuel pump going out, bad injectors or needs a new computer

Re: running very LEAN??

I know with a 3bar map sensor useally the stock boost gauge is useless because it won't get into boost on it.. on a 2bar map though it works like normal. Did you possibly have a 3bar map in before to support a custom chip or something? and swapped in a factory stock 2bar?
what chip do you have? check your vacuum lines by the map sensor as well

Re: running very LEAN??

no, I noticed the factory boost gauge stopped when the problem began. that is another reason I just thought the map was bad...I got the number off of it and crossed it and it came back as a 2 bar sensor. that's what i replaced it with. Maybe the new map is bad, I have seen a lot of new parts off the shelf be bad before. I have a jet chip in it right now. I haven't changed it since i bought the truck. I really want to buy an ultimate and a 3 bar, but i wan't to fix my problem first.

Well since you've futzed with the fuel have you checked ign? My usual question: Does it rev OK in neutral then go to heck under load? If so I'd be real suspicious of ign. Also if you can get a FP gauge on it while it's acting up that will help narrow things down.
Just thinking out loud.

Re: running very LEAN??

yes, it seems to rev ok in neutral. Under a load i can try to accellerate hard and it will cut out. I can do that 3 or 4 times then it will pull strong once.

Check you ign. and fuel pressure / delivery from top to bottom (or end to end :p ), also check your turbo. I am not and I repeat not an expert on turbo's yet but my brother's turbo Vette' lost the turbo in that it all most but not quite seized up. It would spin but real slow 90% of the time and every once in a while would free up or break loose for a short period then do it again. No sound no other tell tail signs, just the exact same type of problem you have.

Re: running very LEAN??

After i read your first post i said maybe the fuel filter is bad, then i continued and read the enitre thread and i noticed you said that the fuel filter was on wrong. Maybe you got bad gas and because the filter was upside down it let crap into the injectors or maybe the fuel pump is starting to go.

The readon i say this again only my opinion and i hope you get it resolved was a friend of mine years ago bought a used car to just get back and forth from the train station and the car had the same problem. The previous owner had no idea why it all of a sudden happened to run like crap. Well anyway we noticed the fuel filter was in wrong and after changing that and running it on the parkway with two bottles of fuel injector cleaner it ran great. :2cents: :)

Re: running very LEAN??

Found the problem (finally) looks as if I have a bad motor mount and when I torqued up the engine it pulled one of the vacuum lines loose..........But it's running great now. Thank's to all that responded with ideas....I was at my wit's end for a while.
