Re: SoCal Surf
It depends where you wanna go, You can go anywhere from Malibu which has beautiful scenery, mid size waves and its somewhat cleaner, but sometimes they have a lot of kelp and the sand is a little more coarse. Venice is small waves and really dirty water, a lot of seals also. El Porto which is right behind LAX and next to El Segundo is dirty (Filtration plants) like Venice also and small waves. Manhattan Beach is really nice, north side of pier is for bodyboarders, south side of pier is for surfers, I've ridden a 12ft face and got barreled here, during storm season waves have been known to touch the bottom of the pier, swells were really nice in early morning hours. Hermosa Beach is not as good as Manhattan but way better than Redondo. Long Beach is dirty (shipping ports) and small waves. Seal Beach is ok more for the somewhat advanced, north side is for swimmers, south side is for bodyboarders. Huntington Beach is mostly a locals only spot even though they have surf competitions here, not too much for bodyboarding. Newport beach is also very nice, "The Wedge" is for the really advanced and not for the faint of heart, Youtube it. you can go to the Newport jetty's around 42nd St. really nice, like having your own personal spot to board, encountered Dolphins within arms reach. I ride a Toobs Bomber with a crescent tail. Hope this helps.
