Well after about 4 months of having my Ty being worked on, it is finally running
I first of all bought this Ty around the beginning of the year. It had a few issues, but for about 5K I knew it was a bargain. The first problem it had was the starter was crapping out on it. When the truck was cold, it would start fine, but when it was warm, it would not start.. So after a month of waiting for the hi torque starter to get here, It ran good for about 2 days. The day I changed out my shocks, the Ty shut down on me. I ordered everything to get it running. I asked the mechanic what he thought it was, and he was not sure. He said my iginition system was bad. So I ordered a new distributor, cap, rotor, ignition module, map sensor, wires, plugs, 2 used ECMS, about 3 used stock ROMS. That took about another month to finally get everything. Well the mechanic installed all the parts and the truck ran like crap. He told me he found a cracked sparkplug and he changed it. He checked all my vacuum lines and said everything was fine: fuel pressure, vacuum, engine compression, etc. but could not figure it out. The truck would run, but when you put it in gear, it would die, or if you stepped on the gas, it would stumble.
I let it sit there for about another month, hoping he would figure it out. He was busy, and kind of gave up on my TY. I went to the states for about 1 week in May, and visited autozone, and Napa. I bought more parts: wires, O2 sensor, vacuum lines, vacuum T fittings, check valves, sparkplugs etc.
Well I went to the shop and drove my TY back to my house late at night, so I would avoid the traffic. My TY would only go about 15 MPH so it would not backfire.
I then went on this board and read all the problems people have had that was similar to mine..
This board is awesome. I first of all redid all my vacuum lines, Installed a new Map Sensor, O2 sensor (i had to cut it in half and use a socket to take off the old one, THe O2 sensor socket kept slipping). I also ohmed out all my wires (checked good) So here is the kicker. I start changing the sparkplugs, and go figure, the mechanic installed a CRT43 sparkplug... I had to run to the tool shop to buy a few different sockets while trying to be my own mechanic... I then put eveything together, and go to start the truck. It would not turn over.
I forgot to put the ECM fuses back in. Well I turn the key and YEAH it fired up...
The idle was a little rough, but I drove it around the block and she ran pretty decent.
I was so happy, that I installed my 18" ZO6 rims and adapters on my Ty. I then proceeded to find another shop to get my timing set. The new mechanic did a full check on the Ty, and found that my distributor was loose and my timing was off. Well he fixed that and now my Ty runs about 90% right now. I know my timing is still off a little, because there is just a slight fluctuation in the RPM's when idling, but other than that it runs like a champ..
I still need to set my timing correctly. But the second mechanic did a pretty decent job, for not seeing a Typhoon before.
I still need to install my front and rear sway bars, my 2" lowering blocks, but I want to change out all my bushings also. Does anyone know a good source and some part numbers to order all my bushings from? I looked at the ones currently istalled and they are all worn. I think that would help out on my ride.
well here are a few pics. Sorry, but I still need to clean it up, and give it a good polishing job. Today, there was a SYTY meet here in Tokyo, but I did not make it. Man I wish I could have been there.
