Trans Install

OK guys,

I'm still evaluating the best way to put in the Trans. I know one thing I DO NOT want to do again, and that is to lift the damned 130-150 # monster under the car up onto my Trans jack. I just can't get the car high enuf to roll the Trans mounted on the jack under the car.

However, I just noticed that they now have these real low motorcycle jacks at Sams', which R rated at about 1000 #. They R probably ~ 6 -10" lower than my Trans jack (Harbor Freight). I'm thinking that that might be low enuf. Then I guess the question will be whether these jacks will go up high enuf ?

Maybe I am just over simplifying everything.. but I have a sears jack, with four jackstands under the truck.. up maybe 15 inches off the ground... slide the tranny under there, with a second set of hands. Man handle it up onto the jack and lift it into place.

It did not take my dad and I more than 20 mintues from the time I slid the tranny under the truck to the time it was bolted to the motor.

Piece of cake.

Hmm, never thought about trying to press a motorcycle/ATV lift into transmission service... My guess is it *could* work but, you would lose the ability to tilt the transmission (alter the angle of the tray that it sits on) like you can with the transmission jack that you already have. Then, there is the much larger "footprint" of the motorcycle/ATV lift. I think it will be very cumbersome under the truck not to mention trying to pump the handle to raise the transmission. My guess is you won't be able to use the handle that comes with it under the truck. The THM-700R4 weights as much as I do but, I "wrestle" it under the truck ok. The "trick" is to have a cinder block and a few short pieces of wood that you can support the tail end on when you raise it up and slide the transmission jack underneath. HTH's

Yes, I know U can wrestle it around w 2-3 guys, but I am by myself unfortunately.

I may attach it to the engine and put them in at the same time. I have one of those levelers for the engine lift, so I can tilt the whole assembly enuf to stuff it in. My Front Diff. is out, so I think I can do it. My buddy and I did it on his TTA.

Cut LOTS of 2x4 blocks& slowly "walk" the trans up them, till high enough to get the jack beneath. Yeah, I got no help here, either....

Thats the way I did it until it was mentioned on HuRydes trans site about using the ratchet straps looped around the frame and under the trans to lift it up so you can get a floor jack under it. Works great for us loners out in BFE that dont have anyone close to bribe to help.

gOOD IDEA ON THE RATCHET STRAPS - USED THEM TO HOLD THE TRANSFER CASE UP UNDER THE CROSSMEMBER RATHER THAN LOWER IT OUT ALSO. oNE LESS HEAVY (& CLUMSY) THING TO STUFF UP THERE!

Please excuse f***in caps lock........

My final engine assembly is stalled because of oilpan interference problems, so I had a Question :

Has anyone ever installed the Trans w the Engine out ? I guess I could raise the Trans up under the car w the Trans Jack, slide on the Torq C, bolt on the Trans case, install the crossmember, and then mount the whole assembly to the crossmember. Don't remember exactly what mounts to what, as its been out 4 awhile.

yes I've done it this way. not easy. I would reccommend waiting on the motor. it makes it easier for me anyway.
