Never saw that in mine when I replaced the input shaft.

Don't put that case back together. I looked over the parts of my broken transfer case today and recognized that part right away. Its one of the dowels that holds your planetary gears in place. That transfer case will self destruct if you attempt to use it without that dowel.

Yup I see it mattW. I only broke the case down in a specific area. I made sure to put a large piece of cardboard under it to catch any fluids ( or busted parts) that's what the case is on so I can just drag it on the cardboard in my carpeted garage
Looking at the picture the pin looks to be press fit/set in the spot. I was told before I looked over the truck (along time ago) the transfer case was the issue. Since I had a spare to drop in I pulled the original out for inspection. The back tail shaft when I removed was full of a grime looking material. Had to be some serious heavily worn material. I moved on to splitting the case open and everything appeared normal the chain was a little loose but when the shit was kicked out of the truck, what do you expect? Now that I know where to look I'm curious to find out why/how that fell out, if others are missing, and what the root is of all the wearing?
