transmission question

Anyone have any good places to turn to for transmission?

Looking to have something built, purchase the " strong internals" have them loaded in and most likely install my self.

Looking for ball park figures on prices. Unfortunately things vary. I just payed upward of $1400+ not including cost of the low mile unit I picked up to just have installed.

I took my trans apart a few years ago and just stopped. Decided to just halt the operation.

Talking to my dad he's telling me to buy some piece of shit TCI unit for $ 800 through summit. I told him first if there was even one, second I might as well just light my money on fire and burn it. I told him I need a transmission good for 700 ftlb of tq and not 700 horsepower. There's a difference between the power and the load. He keeps emphasize to get something that will make it move? Cheap low cost temporary band aid solution. Not feeling it.

Re: transmission question

I have a guy here in Mn who has built alot of 700r4's and I took mine out and told him what I was looking for and he has a secret "recipe" and hasn't had very many issues with come backs over the years....I've seen some of his builds take a very brutal beating in some muscle cars. Oh and it was $800 for me....and still is booting around.

Re: transmission question

I had mine rebuilt by Phoenix transmission in Weatherford, TX. It's probably too far for you but they offer a good warranty in case it breaks due to workmanship. They want at least 1500 bucks to build your core or buy theirs for same price, i think. They give you a brand spanking new torque converter to match. I have had no troubles. 2K miles so far. I get on it every chance I have.

Re: transmission question

I would recommend Rossler. But he is extremely busy and kinda shys away from the low end builds right now. You may wait for a long time.

Re: transmission question

I have always had great luck with my Waller trans.... But Frank looks like he has the best deal on the table and looks to be fairly local to you.

Re: transmission question

My main thing is I want to use the original syclone # 678 case..

Does anyone have any reccomendations on brand/type of internal parts ? Maybe a possible parts list? On what works...

Thing is I took my trans apart to try and ID a failure. Noting grenaded inside just must of wore out due to me bolting on a larger turbo. How do I know what I'm going to reuse? Basically all the hard metal parts? Everything's in like 800 pieces or how ever many make up the inside..

Re: transmission question

A transmission shop probably doesn't want to deal with a trans in 800 pieces, unless that is an exaggeration and you left the sub assemblies together.

Not necessarily. I had several hard parts with very hard to see cracks in them and they had to be replaced. The sunshell also will need to be upgraded. I had to also get a new input drum due to cracking. The kit I mentioned has a steel sleeve to reinforce the input drum.

Randy, I remember seeing the pic on my sy 678 thread. The hair line crack..

I spoke to a guy @ a shop. He said he'd like to look at all the parts and determine what caused to fail. I gave him a basic run through the mill on : bigger turbo, stock trans/converter and wasn't seeing the boost. Told him most likely wore the plates and bands.

I mention rebuild kit. He said he's got his. ? I told him I was reccomended one. He says he doesn't warranty anything customer brings as far as parts. Sounds typical.

Right now I'm just looking for imput and options.

Re: transmission question

I am not a salesman for these guys, but this kit has worked for me for several years: https://www.700r4l60e.com/store/product.php?productid=292&cat=19&page=1

If your mechanically inclined, I also recommend this. I just rebuilt my transmission last December with his kit. It comes with a DVD that walks you threw disassemble and reassembly. Also if you have questions Dana can help you threw it. I did purchase the shop manual but didn't need it, I only looked at it once for bolt torque specs.
