transmissions: th350 - what is involved??

what is involved in swapping our 700 with a th350? i know mike lee has been selling some as a good alternative to building the 700. how much stronger are these trannys, and are they a bolt in option or do they require some fabrication? are all th350's built the same or are some better than others?
Please excuse the ignorance as i know nothing about trannys.

The th350s are pretty strong transmissions. However, you will kick yourself the first time you drive the thing on the highway with no overdrive! The 4l60 can be built to hold a TON of power, my advice is to stick with the overdrive transmission unless you are building an all out drag truck.

it all depends on what you want out of your truck. I noticed you're running in the 13's. you do not need to change to a 350 to run 13's, 12's or even faster. you will lose more than it's worth. your 700 is more than able to handle it. absolutely!! the 350 is stronger, and there is a difference in the way they are built but what you are going to lose outweighs what you will gain. there are guys out there that are running 350 and 400's but they;re making power greatly in excess of where you are. there are several builders that can easily build you a 700 to handle a good amount of power. mike lee, brian hartman, roadmaster are some of the builders that syty guys use and there are many others local to you that I'm sure could do a good job for you. I have a carl rossler out of youngstown ohio built 700 in mine right now and it is handling a bunch more power than 700 horsepower. If you have broken yours and need to get it rebuilt think about using some stronger pieces like clutch packs and sprags and maybe having some pieces heat or cyro treated. If you plan on doing some racing and want to launch it harder consider a different torque converter, especially if you are going to change to a bigger turbo.

You said you didn't know much about transmissions so I hope so of this is useful to you. remember... you don't need to go to a 350 unless you want to go racin and I think you will be sorry if you do.

let me rephrase the question with a little background info. the 13 i ran was stock. new build=4 bolt built motor, t72, 85# injectors, ported vortecs,f.a.s.t...probably 650-hp. the motor is strong, the weak link is the driveline. i know how much it costs to build a strong 700, my question is whether or not it is an easier or better option to go with a 350. the truck will see city streets but no highway.sorry for the confusion........

if you dont need the 4th gear, the th350 has a taller first gear which will actually get you better 60fts, and undoubtably will be stronger, and atleast $1000 less.

All depends on what you are trying to do. A 700R4 can be built up to handle 9 sec passes in a drag car, but we make alot more torque, with alot more stress on the drivetrain, and probably weigh 1000 more lbs. The typical 800hp 700r4 will be strong enough for 600hp in our application.

Whichever the case, the builder is equally as important as the tranny selected.

read mikes answer to you well. and then re-read it! just a hint. do you want to just race or do lyou want to drive around as well? the 350 will be harder on your motor if you cruise very fast. also,how deep are your pockets cause a 700 will test that. smart comment about using a good builder

you got some names to start with. I think if you shop with mike lee, jerry mccoy, or my guy carl rossler you will get what you want.
