Does anyone know of the actual life span of the turbo unit itself? How long befor you had to replace? What cost?

Re: Turbos............

It would pretty much depend on how the vehicle was maintained, driven, cooled down, etc. (Are sy/ty turbos oil and water cooled?) I would say that 80-100k is pushing it for a turbo, unless the thing has been maintained really well. However, anything that is pushing that kind of mileage is bound to need mechanical repair....

Re: Turbos............

I test drove a Ty with 59k miles on it and the turbo was making a strange sound, probably the bearings going out. Thats just one point of data though.

Re: Turbos............

My ty made it to 145k or so on the stock turbo.. regular oil changes, not raced or beat too much (the engine I mean :rotf: ) - at that point it had been leaking oil front the shaft for about 2k

Re: Turbos............

My Sy has 111K on it now and is on the third that I know of, so you see their lifespan is all over the spectrum.

Re: Turbos............

I believe mine is original at 136,000. I have receipts dating back to 1993 and saw no records of a new turbo. Still going strong  Can launch over 10+ psi if I'd like, but never have.

Re: Turbos............

a properly lubed and maintained turbo will last several hunderd thousand miles. Class 8 trucks run a million miles on stock turbo's and they arent even water cooled.

Re: Turbos............

keep in mind 90% of the stock turbo failures are due to people overtightening the black plastic crossover tube for the air intake,. and parts of plastic get sucked in. bent blades = out of balance turbo = quick death.
