Ty 0073 Bowtie Build

Looks like were at it again. After realizing that the lifter bores in the bowtie block were trashed last summer I had to tear the engine down and drop it off at a machine shop to be repaired. Of course 5 months later I finally got the damn thing back after waiting 7 months the last time. So here are the build specs.

Bowtie block 388 .030 with bronze lifter bushings (.875)
Forged Crower crank with 3.5" stroke
Crower rods
JE Xtreme duty pistons at 9.89:1 compression
ARP Head studs
RPM Oil pump
Double Roller timing chain
3 piece comp timing chain cover
Ported Aluminum Bowtie heads 2.1 intk
Bullet custom grind solid roller cam
Crower offset solid roller lifters
Not sure what the push rods are but they are pretty thick
Jesel 1.6 Shaft mount rockers

Hoping to have the truck done by end of the summer.

Even though this pic is of my friends engine I built, it shows we may have a future SYTY kid on our hands, at the very least another car guy

Good to hear it's finally back from the machine shop. Nice pics of Alexander too.

Re: Ty 0073 Bowtie Build

is 9.89:1 compression right?

it seems like a lot of the builds i see here are closer to 8.5:1.

that billet timing cover is pretty sweet looking. did you ever get to run the bowtie block at all yet?

Thanks, for $300 it better be nice. In fact, it is so nice I have decided to ditch my conventional electric water pump in favor of a remote pump. I think it will be a nice set up once its done.

I never did get to run it. I started this project back in early 2012 and am just now getting all my stuff back in the correct fashion. All this stuff spend a combined time of 13 months at two different machine shops, both of which gave me an eta of 2-4 weeks.

Re: Ty 0073 Bowtie Build

Here is one of my current dilemmas. The oil pump on the right came with the Bowtie block, as you can see, its BIG. The pick up doesn't fit under the pan though, looks like circle track stuff. The pump on the left came from RPM which is not what they have pictured as far as the pick up goes. Its the MSelect and I am nervous to use it due to all the failures they had with them a few years back. I also don't like the welded pick up tube, I have lost two motors to the welds that cracked and the tub fell off. One of those was even welded by a machine shop with nickel rod.

Here is the next dilemma, these ****ing valve covers don't fit over the Jesel rockers. WTF?! It appears that when all the valves are closed they seem to fit but when one is open they don't. Why do I get the feeling this will result in another expensive bump in the road

didn't think you had, but thought maybe I missed it. welcome to the waiting game. sucks.

Mike, your moving along bro.. hopefully you'll get the valve cover issue figured out. I know for sure its a tight fit to say the least. Have you tried installing the covers with thick gaskets yet? Like real thick? Try it man...

Verify its not hitting the billet rails inside the cover. They might have to be notched.

Hope you like your cam!

Re: Ty 0073 Bowtie Build

It looks like I got the valve cover issue worked out. I had some of the rockers oriented wrong. I didn't notice the notches on them:roll: Now we're at our next bump, OIL PAN!! Stocker has been beat out quite a bit and still rubs. I decided to hell with it and ordered me a Stef's pan yesterday. $665 w/dipstick provision, not too bad. RPM wanted $700 just for the pan. They are even going to weld a 90* -10 on there for my drain line no extra charge. Unfortunately, I have to wait 4-6 weeks for this pan. So I decided to dummy the intake on, tape up all the holes, and dummy the valve covers on and install the engine in to the truck so I can at least keep busy building the headers for it. Hopefully I will be done with the headers by the time the pan gets here.

So when I went to push the Ty out of the garage last night I opened the door and what did I find?? Mouse shit everywhere!!!! I am really bummed about this because I have never had any critters living in any of my vehicles except for in my 01's air filter box. So now I have to clean up all the nesting they made out of my insulation, vacuum up all the crap and shampoo the carpet. I have a feeling that the carpet is done for which is really fine in the grand scheme of things as I was going to replace it anyway, I just didn't want to HAVE TO replace it.

Stay tuned for the header build, I was thinking of employing my neighbor who has a nice tig welder to help me with this and maybe teach me how to tig, we'll see though.

Stefs oil pan is amazing you will love it. It's a great piece and looks like art when you get it.

Hang in there (sometimes it feels as if the whole universe plots against you with these vehicles). I've heard that dryer sheets, and/or moth balls, may work to keep rodents away
(but I also have seen wasps, bees and spiders make a home in garaged vehicles).

Some critters even chew up electrical wiring so its more than a nuisance. Excellent choice with Stef oil pan (I believe Gerber has one with a windage tray).

Later,
