When I lose vacume I lose brakes

I noticed my brakes really suck now. Last night was the first time I really had to lay on them hard and they simply faded away. Also when I want to power brake I notice the brakes are worthless the closer I get to 0 vacume. What typicaly causes this problem? No abs on my truck.

I don't have ABS and mine is fine. I'm guessing it's your highly built engine!!! lol... Do you have a high perf. vacuum can? What size cam are you running?

You can always install a 12 volt vacuum pump like what GM used on their Cadilacs(SP) and other cars.
W/the electric pump, it will give you more vacuum than a stock engine could as long as the elec pump is good.
How much vacuum does your engine produce?

cam is custom, not really sure on the specs. Vacuum in netral is -9 and in drive at idle is -5. Truck starts to roll at 0 vacuum right through the brackes.

Should be like -20 or -18. Mine is -18 in park and -20 while stopped in drive. You need an electric pump like he was saying or a high performance vacuum canister that can obtain more vacuum. Your beast of an engine is taking it all!!! LOL

you could just do the hydraboost conversion and not have to worry.

You will definatly make more pressure w/a hydra boost, not sure if you want to spend another $700.00 or so?

get hydraboost and forget about it. you wont be sorry. gives you more than double the power of a vac based system and will give you more room under the hood.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll be seriously considering this option as the brakes really do suck right now. Panic stops are not an option with the setup I have now. Syty vendors sell any?

Those resv. cans are really only good if your engine produces good vacumm , which yours does not ,so it will not help that much.
The electric 12 volt vacuum pump is a better idea than the resv can, Hydra boost would be the best choice.

Re: When I lose vacume I lose brakes

FYI Yesterday before I read the replies about the hydraboost option I had already gone out and purchased Krane Cam's Vacuum tank and I installed it today since I can't return it to Hawaii racing, and the good news is it WORKS! my brakes are MUCH better now. I power braked up to 15lbs and the truck did not move at all.
Ok.gif
I did some panic stop test's and it stopped MUCH better, no fade away after 2/3 seconds nice and hard till I came to a complete stop. Bad news was I can't lock up the brakes, so there must be some more stopping power left in it. I'll be going the hydraboost option in the near future but this will get me by untile my final tunning session is completed. Thanks guys for your input what would I do without the syty.net.

does anyone make a disc/disc combo?

you can do the hydras on a drum setup...the 1 ton trucks did it all the time. Of course the setup on those are much beefier. The conpany that I mention above does the hydra in both disk/disk as well as disk/drum. Actually the drum setup in the rear has more surface apply than the disc. They just set them up to the spec that you have. I would leave the drums on if I were you. I had already switched mine out a couple of years ago....did wilwoods all the way around.

I didn't see on the thread if you still have your factory all wheel anti lock brakes. If you do still have, then you won't be able to lock them up. If you have tossed them, then try turning your roters and getting brand new brass filled brake pads. Works for me.
