where's that damn leak?

Ok... so I'm sitting here scratching my head over this one. So the typhoon hasn't moved in almost 6 months, 4 of those it didnt even start up at all. Anyway... it decided to start leaking transmission fluid around xmas for no obvious reason. Just a slow drip. Well now its finally stopped because its out of fluid.

This weekend I got under the truck to see if I could find it and had no luck. Lines are dry as a bone. The fluid seems to be coming out of the seal around the pan and dripping down the TC cover. The whole front half of the pan was damp and it was dripping from the tc cover. Do note the truck sits at a slight down hill angle with its nose pointing down the hill.

I've got a new pan gasket (even came with a new filter) and 5 qts of fluid. BUT before I put the new gasket in and fill it back up in the attempt to find the leak... is there anything I should/can do to track this leak down? I'd rather not mess/burn the trans up if possible. Also dont want to keep buying gaskets and fluid.

What would make it just start leaking like that? The lines are brand new from last may (rpm kit). The pan gasket was replaced once before when they took it off to put the new lines in and flush the fluid. I saw another thread mention the front seal? Could that be it? How hard is that to replace? Saw that the whole trans would need to come out. :(

Just curious if anyone has an idea why it started randomly leaking and what it could be in case this has happened to someone else.

Good call. (Fill tube seal.) If you remove the pan make sure it's not distorted at the bolt holes. IE they will look raised allowing the gasket to leak -between- the bolts. Usually a good whack or 2 on top of the hole with a ball peen hammer will fix things. Check that tube seal first though.

Check the pan bolts for tightness.

Here's other sources of leaks. Some more likely than others. Not in any particular order.

Fill tube seal
TV cable seal
Shift shaft seal
Front servo o-ring
Electrical connector pass-through
Electrical connector o-ring
Cooler lines
Pressure tap plug
Governor cover
Pan gasket
Rear adapter o-ring.
Rear t-case to adapter gasket
Front seal
Pump to case o-rings / bolts
Torque converter porosity
Overfull level, puking from the vent

Re: where's that damn leak?

Anyone happen to have the part numbers for the fill tube seal and the tv cable seal? would napa or advance auto have such parts? Or am I going to have to find them online?

No part #s but I'd bet NAPA has them. If not, any trans shop.
