After months of crap weather I finally got the Phoon out last night for about a 20 mile driveafter completing the conversion, lots of stop and go,crowned roads, cracked roads, sharp turns and lots of straight-aways for WOT blasts.
So first off lets talk about the overall driving feel at low speeds, really good feedback through the wheel,I could tell alot just through that, the steering response although much quicker was much more predictable,100% of the "slop" is not a distant memory, also I should mention that the steering feels a bit heavier which for my personal preference is a good thing
High speed turns
nce again much more predictable and much less steering wheel input to execute the turns, you autocross guys would love it
WOT from stop:very, very little movement of the front end due to torque steer, dont forget I run a front locker, and with the old steering it would have been a death wish on some of these crowned and cracked roads I was on.And just for direct comparison I went down several roads that I knew what the result would have been with the old box because I had traveled them many times last year
WOT downshifts:Once again zero unpredictable movments. From a roll of about 20 mph WOT would downshift from 2nd back to 1st and I got zero torque steer, and just like above last year I would have been doing some drastic counter steering and pedaling of the throttle to control it
So overall I am very pleased so far with the results of the swap and would do it again in an instant. It brought the driving experience to a whole new level of comfort and control
Drawbacks:Only one as of now,the turning radius has been reduced by a pretty large margin,so it may take some getting used to in order to hit parking spot right, but other than that i absolultely love it
I will continue to give feed back on this as I drive it more and get more unique driving situations to report on,I hope this was helpful
