My First Kill

Well it finally happened and not long after my truck is running again. Wasn't sure if this was much of a kill but I was going to work one morning late last week when this driver in a late model Chevy Silverado SS was trying to get me to race. We already have some snow on the roads here in Anchorage and I wasn't too keen on doing a boost launch on ice!

We catch the last traffic light at the airport heights intersection which puts us directly on the Glenn Highway; a three lane freeway out of Anchorage. The light changes and I let him take off first then just a couple of secs later i'm on dry pavement and punch it. I wind up blasting past him and heading down the highway with the Silverado SS trying to catch me. After I hit 120mph I decided the better part of valor was to slow down before I lost control on the patches of snow and ice; besides the ball joints need replacing. I don't know if the SS had any other mods than a custom dual exhaust that I noticed

The story jumps to yesterday, I'm at the local Carrs grocery store and that same truck pulls up next to me and says he wants a rematch. He didn't know what the heck blew his doors off that morning so he did some internet research to find out what a Syclone was. We had a friendly conversation and he wanted to know how much I'd sell it for!.

Anyway it was fun though kinda stupid on these roads, fortunately there wasn't any traffic in front of us at the time. My motor is completely stock except for chrome valve covers and a set of Crane 1.6 roller rockers installed. So far it even starts just fine in single digit temps (3 to 5 above 0)

Re: My First Kill

We do have them here; more than you would expect but they are either not running or they don't get driven year round.

Re: My First Kill

people in Alaska probably appreciate the AWD thing ALOT. I wonder what the ratio is, of AWD/4WD vs. 2WD

Only the intersection at the light was a bit slick; the actual highway was clear and dry otherwise we wouldn't have raced. I decided to back off approaching a curve that I thought might be slick especially since the speedo was indicating 120mph. In some places our roads are grooved due to the use of studded tires in the winter.

I didn't know how the performance level of a Silverado SS would compare to a Syclone. I've heard the Trailblazer SS is even slower. I used to own a Mercedes ML55 AMG which is slower than the Syclone off the line but would eventually take it at higher speeds.

Re: My First Kill

The Silverado SS is no match for a Syclone. The Trailblazer SS is actually faster than the Silverado, but I doubt it would pull on you without some mods. Good kill!

Re: My First Kill

I looked up the specs and the stock Silverado SS is 6.0 L V8 with 345hp 0-60 in 6.3sec and the stock Trailblazer SS is the same motor but with 390hp and a 0-60 in 5.5sec. Anyone know how a stock Syclone would stand up against a stock Ford Lightning? On dry pavement of course..

It's huge. The best-selling cars in Alaska are Subarus. Other than those, we have a lot of AWD/4WD trucks and SUVs. All AWD performance vehicles seem to have been pretty successful here. We have more WRXs, STIs, SVXs, Lancer Evolutions, 3000GT VR-4s, Audi S4s, Porsche Cayennes, etc. than anywhere else I've been. We have more SyTys per capita than anywhere else (about 40 in the Anchorage area). I have one of 9 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4s that were sold here new.

Oh yeah, great to see you're putting the truck to good use now, Dave!

Re: My First Kill

Well, thanks to you Tim and Montana for all of your hard work the past 8 months, it wouldn't have gotten done without you guys:myclone: Talked to Montana yesterday and he's gonna get with you regarding picking up all the extra parts and coordinate a day and time for all of us to go out to eat. Yea, the truck is running great and starts very well on these cold mornings. Can't wait to get a remote start installed. :D

Yes we do have alot of AWD/4WD vehicles in use up here, also it's the AWD/4WD vehicles you see "Ditch Diving" in the winter because their drivers think they are invincible on the snow and ice! This would apply mostly to the bigger SUV's and Pickup's.

The LS2 motor in the TB SS is a completely different animal than the Silverado SS. You will out launch a Lightning, but he might run you down if it has enough room.

Are they both LS2's with the Silverado SS being detuned or are they completely different motors? Also was curious how a stock Syclone would do against a stock STI or EVO?

Re: My First Kill

I believe the Silverado has an LQ9. I drove one and I would like to know where the 345 hp is hiding. Not impressed at all. Just my opinion.

Correct. The SSS has an LQ9 (cast iron block) and the TBSS has an LS2 (al. block). Two different animals really. The 345 is hiding in the form of weight. Those trucks are usually around 5500lbs min. However, they do make a lighter 2wd version, but they're still based off the 1500HD chassis, so they still tip the scales above 5000lbs. They can be made to go fast though; the fastest stock short block that I know of is running 11.2-11.4's. :D
