Xfi vortec timing?

Tuning on the wifes Ty. I'm at 28 deg timing with 15 lbs of boost
at 18deg runs like crud. The more tming the better. I started where
I normally do but this is strange. Verified timing on ballancer is same as
ECM. It is with in a half degree.
Ideas? Thoughts?

AFR's normal?

Re: Xfi vortec timing?

Standalones run more displayed timing than the stock ECM does. Been that way since the gen6 dfis.

Haven't dug into exactly why- I suspect it's a function of reference angle and corrections to overall ECM timing.

Make a few passes with clean plugs and check 'em. If you have individual cyl timing, you want to do this anyway so you can adjust on a cyl by cyl basis, anyway.

Re: Xfi vortec timing?

I run 32 Deg. on 93 octane with my FAST system runs good. Has to do with the Timming angle set up by the FAST eng.. ( Thats what I was told) Dig hit the nail on the head. Set it at 32 & check your AFR.

Re: Xfi vortec timing?

Is this a common issues on cars/trucks with a dizzy set-up?

I have a XFI in my GN and the timing seems to be spot on from what it liked on the stock ecm.

Scott. how is the crank trigger used on the syty/dizzy ? also being a vortec does it use the cam sensor in the dizzy as a cam or does that act as the crank signal?

is the balancer correct for that engine? has the ring slipped on the ballancer? are u using a msd box? could it be retarding the timing thus. making you command more timing in the xfi to over ride it?

I'm just tring to wrap my head around it cause i want a xfi on the stock sy so i can tune it without dealing with the chip style crap/ecm, live time tuning rocks i'm spoiled on the buick

Thats alot of timing for a boosted engine.

hell my buddy's camaro twin turbo with alum heads and a xfi is not running that kind of timing!

Scott

when you are verfing the timing you are setting the timing in the tables to a # thats not close to the crank ref angle as that can cause you to be wrong on the actaul timing.

It's best to have a adj timing light you can set the timing light to the actual # in the timing table and it should then reads zero on the engine. If it's off then that your timing error.

also there is a couple of table that need to be zeroed out. when checking timing like the idle timing trim table, and the spark offset ats table.

T'm sure you know this but just a reminder :p

Re: Xfi vortec timing?

You dont need that xfi Scott , you should let me get at it . You just need code 59 :)

Re: Xfi vortec timing?

I don't have a adjustable timing light. But what is in the ECM at idle
is what it is reading on the ballancer. It is a pro billet sfi ballancer with
numbers up to 50deg of tming.
I have the reference angle set to 6deg. Which is what was recomended
with gm hei
thanks for the input guys!
I'll keep you posted. Oh afr is 11.7 wot across the board

Ignition timing is a very specific thing. You cannot go by a 'run it at XXX because that's what my friends car did". Lots of things can affect that (cam, heads, compression, overall efficiency of the entire system, etc). Do what the plugs tell you.

See ya soon!

Re: Xfi vortec timing?

I use all my darn senses when tuning and driving a car. When somthing's running right on 93 it makes a sweet smell after you let off of it. Buick's have a harmonic buzz when they are right. Typhoons are broke all the time Lol.. But they have a tone when they are right too and this one didn't have it till about 25deg of timing. Before that it was almost popping out the exhaust.
It's a nice clean sound at 28 and I'm thinking it wants more.
At this point I want to go ahead and stop on timing since it's pulling decent and sounding decent.
Now I'll re-focus on fuel and get it all to 1-3% correction.
Then I'll go back to timing and plug reading.
Back in my Nitrous days I pulled plugs TONS. but it's been awhile since those days.
I'll have to put a buick Knock Module in this and re-hook back up the knock sensor just incase. But I know it's not ping'n.
See you in a few :)
