58x ECM Conversion (E37 ECM, 58x crank, 4x cam, electronic throttle)

Hi Guys,

I've posted previously about our intentions for a GM fuel management system upgrade for these engines, but this new thread is going to be specific to the 2007-up E37 ECM.

About the E37 ECM
Introduced with the 4.3L engine in the 2007 Silverado. This engine uses wasted spark and electronic throttle. The crankshaft signal requirement is 58x and the camshaft requirement is 4x. This controller is supported by EFILive and will handle 3 BAR.

58x Crankshaft Signal Requirement
We were able to pull from the shelf our 58x SBC crankshaft reluctor and TPIS billet aluminum SBC timing cover. We used a production GM 1996-up Vortec crankshaft position sensor. Being that the 4.3L has so much in common with the SBC engine, there was no need for a reluctor specific to the 4.3L engine. The crankshaft reluctor installs behind the timing cover. No goofy bracketry to install to hold and align a crankshaft position sensor.

4x Camshaft Signal Requirement
We pulled from the shelf again our 4x SBC camshaft reluctor for 1996-up Vortec distributors. We've been using these reluctors for Gen IV 58x conversions for SBC and BBC engines. Since the 4.3L shares the same Vortec distributor (less 6 cyl cap), there was no new work to do here.

Electronic Throttle Requirement
All GM Gen IV ECMs require electronic throttle. More specifically, the GM Gen IV ECMs have no provision for an idle air motor and require two throttle position signals and an electronic pedal. Again, we were able to pull from the shelf our TPI/LT1 electronic throttle body as it is the same bolt and bore pattern as the Sy/Ty plenum.

Wasted Spark Coil Module
We designed a bracket that locates the ignition coil module just below and behind the stock intercooler. Th CNC milled bracket attaches to the valve cover with two longer valve cover to cylinder head bolts.

EFILive Tuning Support
The biggie here is that this engine can now be tuned with popular tuning software. EFILive has fantastic support for the E37 ECM.

Future Development
We are working toward a 4x camshaft timing sprocket and timing cover solution. This is how GM did it with the Gen IV LS engines to avoid the installation/alignment issues of the camshaft signal. We hope to have this in production by the end of 2013.

That's as far as we've gotten with this project. Plans are to run the engine on the test stand in the upcoming months and then send it out for some dyno time.

This is expensive. There is no way to sugar coat it. Crank/cam signal solution, billet timing cover, throttle body, coil module with bracket, ECM, and wire harness will exceed $2,000. We're not taking orders or looking for people who want to try this out. This is just a heads up to let you know what we are doing with the Syclone/Typhoon engines. If we decide to offer a conversion kit for sale, details will be available at that time.

I love seeing new things for these trucks! Good job.

Now that the throttle bracket is gone and no longer has provisions for the TV cable, how do you control the transmission? Would it require changing to an electronic controlled version?

A 4L60E or 4L80E would be required.

Again...this is an expensive upgrade.

So with this harness you can always just swap in a 07+ motor in just install our intake aswell. I have seen a couple go for less than $300 here in sout texas with low miles on the motors since they do v8 swaps on there trucks

I've not yet had my hands on a 2007-up 4.3L V6, but I do have some of the parts in the shop. The timing chain looks like it belongs on a bicycle and not an engine. I am curious to know if the 2007-up cylinder heads are the same bolt pattern as the 1996-up cylinder heads.

Is the timing cover pictured above a one off piece or modified version of the one TPIS sells now?

I thought the sensor attached at the bottom left (passenger side)

The timing cover pictured is a modified timing cover. The sensor you see is camshaft sensor and a boss we machined and attached to get a camshaft signal from the face of the camshaft timing sprocket.

The crank sensor hole is still in the timing cover. The crank sensor boss is clearly visible at the bottom/side of the timing cover.

Well I had done some research and the intake is the same they just plug the distributor port since he timing chain cover has the cam sensor on it. I wanted to install it on my 2001 s10 xtreme but I didn't do it since it was a 58x crank on it

You could have. We have a 3x crank reluctor solution for installing the 2007-up engines in 1996-up Vortec engines. The 1996-up 3x reluctor is about 4 inches in diameter. The 2007-up reluctor is more than 5 inches in diameter.

Re: 58x ECM Conversion (E37 ECM, 58x crank, 4x cam, electronic throttle)

great work!

Probably not worth your time/effort, but if you were able to mount the throttle body electronics on the other side of the throttle body, it would probably look nicer and semi-hidden. Not sure it would easily fit with the heads of the bolts of your egr blockoff, but just a though in looking at it.

Agreed. If there were a Syclone/Typhoon market for these throttle bodies, it would make good sense. I don't think there will be much of a market. This has the possibility of being no more than a one-off engine due to the costs involved.

Wow! This is definitely eye candy. Awesome job. Looks great! I'd love to upgrade to an 07+ 4.3L in my '01 Blazer. I didn't research it much before buying my replacement '01 GM longblock, though.

That's very impressive! Is this mainly for more tuneability via EFI-Live or are there other benefits?

Think you would be surprised. I much rather have this setup than my Holley stand alone. Cost is about the same.

I can put the Holley system in my Camaro. I much rather go this route on the Sy.

Get it finalized. I'll want the same setup on my Sy for sure. I'm sure others will too.

People still spend big money on BS3, 80-E's, etc.

Code what?
Looks promising, what are the costs involved in the swap. Is efilive that user friendly for the 1st time tuner? Being expensive has been mentioned several times, what's expensive? A standalone such as bs3 can be done for under 2k. I like the idea of using the factory crank trigger. Makes me wonder if its worth converting to that to run with my bs3. Good work!
