Bumper removal

Whats the trick to take the actual bumper off of the support? I am trying to get the plastic from the metal. Metal is bent bad deforming the actual bumper. Do I drill these out or cut them? Everyone following my NEED help thread knows what I am up against. Thanks Joe

Re: Bumper removal

Check out this picture. Each red line points to a rivit that either needs to be cut or drilled. They should be plastic, so cutting will be easier.

Re: Bumper removal

Thanks Jeff- Was not sure if I just cut them. I guess the rivets are a common part to find at the dealer or online?

Yep, you can buy the plastic ones by the bag full. just search here and you will get the old and new part numbers. Beware, they did change the part number. Make sure you find the updated thread.

I have some of the parts you are looking for. Let me know if you are interested in buying them locally.

Re: Bumper removal

there are also some plastic washers behind some of the rivots you will want to keep them for the reinstall.

Re: Bumper removal

This is what I managed to get off. Is the washer on it?

Re: Bumper removal

So discard everything. Some one will have the correct fasteners. I do not have any literature on this

The factory rivets are metal, and can't be reused. My truck didn't have any of the plastic washers, but could have been removed before. You should be able to remount it without any washers, but if the bumper cover needs to be spaced out away from the support to have a straight finish, you can use plastic washers/spacers. Also if the rivet holes are damaged or enlarged at all you can use them under the head of the rivet for more strength.

Aright, Mine has plastic so thinking it has been removed and installed before. Thanks for the link.

Looks like it could be stock. As Dave said below.

My Syclone's factory front and rear bumper covers use plastic rivets.

I thought they were all metal from the factory. Good to know, not that it helps me out any. haha. I hate my trucks previous owners more and more everyday!

mine as well but the cladding mounting disks on the body were metal on my truck. i don't think that they were removed at anypoint in time, so i think that those were factory

Just took it apart. Real easy task. I just wanted to make sure.... Rivets are plastic. there were the washers, clear/translucent plastic.

Can you take a picture of the washers, as well as provide dimensions if possible?

Re: Bumper removal

While I am still on the topic, I am trying to salvage my black GMC letters from my grill. The appear to have a non removable fastener. It looks press fit. I typed sonoma grille emblem removal in google, and nothing really syclone or 91-92-93 era. All the next generation and its showing 10mm hex.

The one link I found show this http://www.newgmparts.com/parts/199...eid=1164439&diagram=GD91350&diagramCallOut=10

I am trying to remove something along the lines of that minus the hex head and ability to be removed.
