I bought '92 Typhoon #1353 about a week ago. I've been poking around this forum for a couple days now, mostly searching and getting to know the truck. From what I've read in my searching it seems i have many of the common problems these trucks suffer from. But i still like the truck, I've always wanted one and when the chance to pick one up for under $9k came i jumped on it. The owner told me that it had sat for a few years and everything is still stock. Even still has the stock CD player... Its not perfect, I'd say it just shows its age. Cracked dash, faded paint and stuff like that. The seats and head liner are still in good shape.
In the first two days of ownership I've replaced all the shocks and the fuel pump and fuel filter.. I was about to replace the oil press sensor, but i searched and found where some had spun all the way around and got stuck. So i looked again and sure enough thats what it had done. Took the dash apart and flipped it back over, now it works great. Showing about 60psi normally. She doesn't smoke yet, only 91k miles on the engine.
One thing i haven't figured out yet is the start up... on a cold start up, it idles really bad, to the point were it just wants to die. If i hold the rpm's around 1500 for few, till its warmed up she idle fine. Rough. but thats normal from what i gather. Before i put the new fuel pump in it took allot just to get it started, but now if fires right up but just doesn't want to idle right.
So I've been searching here for performance stuff. Don't worry I like the "search" button, so you probably wont here much from me..
Anyway from what I've gathered, i could build a short block capable of handling 600hp for under $2k. (Eagle Rods, JE piston w/rings, nitrided crank, billet main caps). I don't really ever plan on making 600hp, but its just nice to have a large safety margin. I know turbo cars, i've got a Mitsubishi 3000GT with a 10:1 motor running Twin-Turbos at 10psi. I like the Ty because its cheaper to get what i expect. For $2k in the Mitsu i would only be able to buy Pistons or robs, but not everything i could get for the Ty. Ya know.
Well, I'll close this up before it gets too long. Let me just say, I am very happy to be part of this community and grateful that I could finally pick up a piece of American automotive history.
