help on my next move.

I guess I smoked my trans. I need help on what I should do. You can see in my sig. on my mods. My goal has always been a solid 12 second truck. I should be close so I only plan on doing a engine rebuild and call it done as far as the power is concerned. My questions are what should I do with the trans. 1st I have to find out why my trans smoked! I drive it hard but only wot a few times a month from a stop and I have only boost launched it 4 times in a year. (although it was down 5 months) I plan on driving it about 100 miles a month on weekends, once in a while smoke a honda on the street. and go to the track a few times a year. Its by far not going to be a race truck, more of a "drive around, but if you piss me off truck" what should do???

1) should I trust Aamco when they said my trans is toast. It drives, shifts soft and late. (used to shift hart and late.) guessing the TV cable could have caused a wrong pressure situation and killed it???

2)should I have a syty member build me up a 700r4 because I only need that much.?

3)Do a TH350 because I realy dont need the od and its stronger then the 700r?

4) go all out and wait a while and do a 4l80E conv.?

5)what would you do?

Here is the deal. I have about 3-4k of funds advaliable as of right now. That will max out my "Sy" credit card. I should get a 3k tax return in feb. I also have some nice l35 heads that I want to put in but if it helps get my truck on the road?

ALSO how hard are the trans in these trucks to change? everything so far has been ok. I helped my dad drop a trans once but that was 15 years ago. THANKS

Re: help on my next move.

Hey Gary, first I don't trust Aamco, take it to another shop and don't tell them anything about Aamco and just say " Hey I'm having trouble with my transmission can you LOOK at it real quick and give me a rough estimate? " Then see what they say and if it is close to what Aamco said you might have a better idea.

Gary, me, myself, and I would do the 4L80E swap. Yeah it's expensive but can you honestly say in 6 months to a year of driving your truck the way it is now you wont want it faster. If yes then you might be fine with a well built 700R4, but if your anything like me you can never go fast enough and will always get bored with what you have. Plus I just want to the satisfaction of knowing I can run it as hard as I want and not have to worry about it.

Re: help on my next move.

Get a second opinion. Check out Gear Master in San Jose off of Keys and 7th St ask for Aldo. He rebuilt my trans.

Go the 4L80E, That way you are done with it. That way when you get the bug for more power , You will be ready for it. NOTICE: I said when, not if :rotf: :rotf: .

Re: help on my next move.

AAMCO blasphemy, atbest you will get a stock rebuild that will fail again. Most likely you won't be that lucky.

I would do 2 or 4 but it depends on your future goals, if you plaaning on running 12's a well built 700 will hold up for quite a while especially if you don't beat it daily. If you want to go deep into the 11's 4L80E.

Re: help on my next move.

I'd go with the 4L80E if you have the funds just for the piece of mind honestly.. even if you don't plan on other mods which it sounds like your enjoying what you got now i'd say a 700r just isn't going to like the bost launches or daily hard driving for years to come plus you'll have to worry about it and cringe each time you do one if you go with the 700r4 imo.

Re: help on my next move.

My trans susposed to have had a 3k build. Either I was lied to, it was done wrong, or I f-up something. The TV does not click like it use to. It clicks once and pops into place.

I will talk to George on this site about a conversion setup. Would it be hard to do? I guess motor mounts and heads would be a good idea too at this time.

Would a stock 4l80e with a shift kit be good enough or does it have to have a build on it?

Re: help on my next move.

I think it was Jeff that said something the other day about a stock 4L80E can handle about 500-600 hp if that helps in your decision. Since you need mounts and a tranny pull the whole thing as one and put back as one, those bell housing bolts are a major PIA and you have to take it out any way.

Re: help on my next move.

Kinda funny to see the Aamco in the google add as we bash them?
I PM'ed George Blake about the 80e. Thanks guys. I guess no one likes the 700r? :D

Re: help on my next move.

Gary - sorry to hear you toasted your trans. I certainly hope racing me didn't contribute to it :( I'm having my own tranny issues so I feel your pain. I'll be pulling mine out again in about a week to install the new 9/11 2500 stall converter. I sure as hell hope this fixes my problems or I'm going to yank the trans and converter back out, sell it, and do the 4L80E conversion. I think your truck is making good power because you were right there with me on a couple of those launches but then dropped back. I'd love to ride in a Sy/Ty with the conversion to see how it shifts/performs. Anyway, here's hoping all the Bay Area Sy/Ty trucks are back on the road in the spring and ready for Infineon. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Re: help on my next move.

I noticed it slipping before. The racing just sped up the proccess. Better in san jose then in sonoma at the track . I might not have made it home. Next summer I will be ready to go again. I had fun. Your truck is fast. I cant beleave you only did 12.7 in it. you should have a low 12 truck easy. SO keep it running in march because I want to go again. I will let you know how the conversion goes.

Re: help on my next move.

Yeah, if my TCC would lock and my engine didn't spin up to 5000RPM at WOT, I'd have a fast truck on my hands. Hopefully the 2500 stall 9/11 will keep the revs down where they need to be. You've done a lot to your truck in the past year...don't let the tranny blues get you down. Rent an engine hoist while you have the tranny out so you can lift the motor and do the solid mounts. I've already done all this, I can help.
