intake manifold for 4.3

does anybodyknow which intake 4 barrel manifold it is that fits our motors. Iwas thinking of throwing on a bigger and better injection system with this manifold and maybe an accufab bodyif I go to a bigger turbo. I think the manifold is fromaa pontiac unit maybe??? it's probably the same one the Hoovers are running on theirs.

Any idea, how does it perform flow wise compared to the stock setup?

Anybody ever did some kinda comparsion between the different manifolds which we could use in our application?

Edelbrock, Daytona, 4BBL, Raised Runner, stock etc.

Here is the list that GM Perf Parts is offering right now:

https://www.spoperformanceparts.com/store/catalog/Category.jhtml?CATID=323

Also anybody knows the TB which fits this stuff? Is this the one, which is used by Mike Lee and points toward the front of the engine?

that edelbrock is only the lower intake manifold. mike and others (like pte) sell the upper that bolts on in place of the carb. you should be able to bolt the upper on so that it points forwards, etc.

i have seen upper manifolds that use the stock style gm rectangular throttle body and others that use the round type throttle body. best to ask mike what he uses/sells.

i think he means something like this.

what i dont understand, is why cant this intake be used with late model vorte heads, since the ports are raised?

Hey E-rue.

Do you know if this intake will work with the stock style L35 heads? is the pattern the same as the stock throttle body? I have a set of massively worked L35's that Jim Stokes did on my engine that he claims can't be beat unless I would go to something like the pontiac NASCAR heads. I want to keep them but I'm looking to improve the intake if I go to a new 76 GT Q trim turbo from the PT 72 I have now. the price of this intake isn't too bad at slightly more than 200 bucks, and with an accu body this might be just the ticket. my stock intake is as far as a stocker is going to go.

Thanks

Les

i seriously doubt it would work with stock or L35 heads. says on the web page its for a specific head, and it gives a part number. it also says the port is raised .2 inches i think? anything is possible i guess........ if you want to spend the cash to make it happen, but i immagine you would be in for the following.

custom porting to get it to match up
custom drilling to get it to bolt up
custom welding to get injector bungs installed.
more than likely custom fuel rails
a 90 adapter to mount a front facing throttle body (mike and PTE has these)
a big single blade throttle body (ones ive seen are kinda like an LS1)
then you would have to have an air to air intercooler with custom piping cause the TB is in a different location.

it would be a big project im sure. get out your wallet :p

yea, you're right. sounds like a massive amount of work. Bill Gates might be able to afford it. but doesn't look like I can. There's got to be another way, just can't think what it would be for right now. I forgot about having to change the air to air. lets see; NASCAR heads, manifold, throttle body, fuel rails, different IC. Probably could get it all done for somewhere between 12 and 15 large. that's all

Gulp!!!

curious as to what Jim Stokes claims his L35 heads flow?

The conversion is going to cost roughly $1700, which would include a ported used manifold, wilson tb, 100deg plenum, match porting to your heads, efi fuel rails installed, tb adaptors, ford tb cable.

You could get a daytona manifold to mate up no problem to the vortec heads, but new the manifolds are near $600 bones. We have used the edlebrock, the gm, and the brodix on various heads. sometimes you need to make spacers, sometimes you need to mill the surface of the manifold.. All depends on the heads, and port work.

I have a complete 23 pontiac top end for sale if anyone is interested. Everything but the manifold (fully ported) is brand new. It is a complete match ported package and will not be separated. I'm asking $6000 and if you are interested I can list all the pieces which are included.

So you have never used the l-35 heads? Wonder what they flow?

What is the fastest l-35 truck out there? Anyone know?

Les, sounds like you have a pretty quick truck , do you think the stock intake and pleunum have topped out ? Just curious why you were thinking about the other manifolds, i like mike lees custom sheetmetal intake for sure, if i was going to spend 2000 on all the other stuff i would just buy the sheetmetal one as it comes with fuel rails.

Mike, if i were to buy one of your sheetmetal intakes could you make it for the 58mm throttle body i have from arizona speed and marine or do you have to go with a ls1 type throttle body? And can the throttle body face the side still or towards the front only?

One more ?, mike if you read this or anyone who has tried it, what gains are there going to a different intake setup. Lets say you are at 600hp with the stock intake and went to a sheetmetal custom, i wonder what the gains would be ? 50-75 hp maybe depending on heads and boost. What do you think.

has anyone actually done any kind of dyno testing to see if the carb/single plane setup is actually better (it definetely looks cooler). I'm sure it is but I wonder how much better.

jack i can do the manifold anyway you like.

We do the efi conversion on the 18 deg and raised runner heads b/c you really dont have much of a choice in the way of manifolds.

for our project truck (not the one pictured) we figured it would take $600-$750 for a used syty upper/lower manifold. For close to the same price, we have a better manifold, with a better TB location. PLus it makes working on the truck a breeze.

As far as dyno #'s/hard data, its hard to say. When we do these manifolds it's usually on a fresh motor so you can't really come up with any before and after results. If you take a peak in MMFF you will see many of the Pro 5.0 cars using this exact setup (usually facing the firewall b/c the intercooler is in the passenger seat) The sheetmetal manifold with properly designed plenum top should give you the best results however it is a bit more costly.

I've worked with a few people who have done some good research on the injector locations of the stock intake manifold and they found that the bung angle left alot to be desired when in the 600+hp range. Basically the injector spray pattern was not atomizing perfectly into the combustion chamber. I have seen one lower manifold where all this was fixed, and modfied and you couldnt even tell. It was pretty sweet.

To find out if it is worth your time and money to switch to a sheetmetal or aftermarket manifold on a production style head, you would have to get on the flow bench and start playing around and see what your current heads/manifold flow. If there is a restriction somewhere, then maybe you are being held up. All the heads we do the efi conversion on flow over 315/240 cfm @.600".

can i use a gutted carb as a thorttle body for a fuel injection setup? if so is thier a way to get a tps sensor to work on the carb?

Hi 2730
I was toying with the idea of going to one of the new gt q trim76 turbos and was thinking that the heads and intake won't go any farther than they are now. the motor is a jim stokes stroker, what he calls his street motor, and dynoed at about 700 horse. I've leaned it out , turned the boost up a little, and am running higer octane than the dyno runs so who knows now. I asked him about going to big vortecs instead of the massively worked late model L35 he did and he said I wouldn't really gain anything, and that the intake was also worked as far as a stock intake would go. His suggestion is Pontiac NASCAR heads, for mucho dinero!!! I can't afford to change the heads too right now, but was thinking of going to the bigger turbo and maybe a dfferent intake. I probably won't do the intake now cause I don't want to buy something that will not be able to work on the heads when next year comes. (the curse of not being rich enough to do everything at once! have to string the fun out a little more) My choice would have been the bow tie heads instead . Truck ran 10.81 last year at 127MPH and is still a little too fat. It could probably use a bigger air to air also. becoming a better speedpro guru wouldn't hurt either.

I had trouble keeping a tranny in it last year, so I'm really afraid to go for too much more power unless I switch. It's got a built 700 that's about maxed out. Mike had an interesting sounding 350 for sale but sounds like someone has already snatched it up. this will be the last 700 for me

Just a FYI incase you haven't already heard, Edelbrock is building a 4bbl intake that will bolt directly to vortecs and will be available at the end of this month. P/N is 2114.

the tranns is still up for grabs.. money talks and I have not received a deposit.

the edelbrock manifold should be nice. i will have to go down there for a visit. they are local.

Tooky

Serious about performance
I'm a little confused. Far as I know the stock "SYCLONE 4.3 TURBO" intake manifold (which is quite cool in my opinion) has gone at least 9.99.. So I get some kind of implication that any truck that "needs" the aftermarket intake manifold is running 9s or better, and for that I've just gotta ask; whose are these trucks? Mike are all your customers Los Angeles street racers? Don't misinterpret me; it's just that if there are a bunch of fast trucks out there; I like hearing about 'em 8)

I dont think i need a sheetmetal intake but i do WANT one, and who knows, if i ran 10.90 with the stock setup maybe i could do 10.50s with the sheetmetal, or maybe no gain at all, well i kinda doubt that it would pick up no gain.

But for me its about wanting a sheetmetal intake to finish off the syclone with the sheetmetal valve covers, man would that be trick.

I think another issue is availability. It's not like there's a bunch of Sy/Ty intake manifolds tumbling around out there. It will probably cost more to have an Edelbrock manifold converted and everything working on it, but it's not like finding a needle in a haystack to get the parts to do it.

Combine that with the ability to put the throttle body on the front/side/back with some fabrication work and you have more flexibility. If Edelbrock does come out with a v6 manifold that works with the newer style vortecs it will probably cheaper to go that route than have your stock manifold reworked for it to fit.

Just my $0.02
